Fans have been eagerly awaiting a glimpse at the the bundle of joy since she was born, and now Jay-Z and Beyonce's daughter Blue Ivy Carter has finally made her public debut.
The "Watch the Throne" rapper and his "Run the World" wife excitedly posted the first photos of their newborn to their website on Friday (February 10), hoping to subside the frenzy for the snapshots.
As for the pictures themselves, little Blue Ivy is perfection just moments after birth, sporting a head-full of thick black hair and porcelain-like skin.
New parents Jay and Beyonce are also featured in the photos, both beaming as they cradled their now four-week-old baby girl.
Additionally, the power couple attached a handwritten note with the pics, reading, "We welcome you to share in our joy. Thank you for respecting our privacy during this beautiful time in our lives," signed, "The Carter Family."

Judge also takes shot at 'The Voice,' asking, 'How many artists have they discovered?'
By John Mitchell
<P>Simon Cowell is finally opening up about the cast shakeups on "The X Factor" as well as about rumors that two <i>very</i> famous divas are in talks to join Fox's reality singing competition. </p><div class="player-placeholder right" id="vid:698604.id:1672066" width="240" height="211"></div><p> Late last month, it was announced that judges Paula Abdul and Nicole Scherzinger and host Steve Jones had been <a href="/news/articles/1678191/paula-abdul-exits-x-factor.jhtml">fired from "X Factor"</a> and would be replaced in its second season. The announcement came as a shock to fans, but Cowell tells <a href="http://www.hollywoodreporter.com/live-feed/simon-cowell-x-factor-firings-voice-287806" target="_blank">"Extra"</a> in an interview airing Wednesday (February 8) that the decision was a long time coming and was ultimately made "at the beginning of the year — and we were told it had to happen straight away." While her dismissal came as a surprise, Cowell says Abdul "was very gracious" about it. "She understands it's business," Cowell said of his real-life friend. "It's never personal." Scherzinger, according to Cowell, was "disappointed" with the producers' decision to replace her. But the former Pussycat Doll insisted in a new <a href="http://www.accesshollywood.com/nicole-scherzinger-talks-x-factor-departure-i-have-no-regrets_article_60184" target="_blank">"Access Hollywood"</a> interview that she "had a wonderful experience on the show." "What happened? Well, all I know is that I gave 110 percent to that show," she said. "I know everybody's talking about it, they're saying good, bad, they love me or hate me, but the one thing you can't say is that I didn't give it my all." Cowell also used his time with "Extra" to squash rumors that Beyoncé or Mariah Carey might be joining the "X Factor" team when it returns to Fox later this year. He seemed particularly amused by <a href="http://www.reuters.com/article/2012/02/08/idUS114237084820120208" target="_blank">talk</a> that the show was offering Beyoncé a nine-figure contract to join the judges' table. "The budget for the show is $100 million. That would never ever happen. It's absolute nonsense," he told "Extra." "No one is going to pay $100 million for someone. I genuinely haven't had a conversation with her about it. Not at all." The same can be said for Carey, who Cowell said he likes very much and would be a fine addition to the show but is an impractical choice because of the long hours involved. "I adore her, love her," he said. "But you can't expect someone who has just had two kids [and] has a record career to make the kind of commitment we would need on this show." "X Factor" did not perform as strongly as expected in the ratings last fall, which many feel precipitated the planned revamp, though the ever-cool Cowell is not sweating the competition. In this latest interview, Cowell took on "The Voice," which returned to NBC after the Super Bowl and delivered big ratings, saying the makeup of his judging panel is what sets "X Factor" apart. "I would ask how many records have they made, how many artists have they discovered?" Cowell asked of "The Voice" mentors Christina Aguilera, Cee Lo Green, Adam Levine and Blake Shelton. "That's where we have to be different on the judging panel. It's very important that you have people on the panel that have actually signed and made artists successful all over the world, not just have made hit records yourself."</p>

With the once-troubled exes poised to return to Sunday's show, we look back on the assault that changed everything.

Rihanna performs at the 2011 Grammys
Photo: Getty Images
They were R&B's answer to Britney and Justin. Young, gifted and famous, Rihanna and Chris Brown had become a favorite of the blogs and mags in 2008; pictures of them coupled up on the beach or just making a fast food run cropped up everywhere. Rihanna once remarked that Brown helped her to feel her age in a very grown-up industry.
But everything changed on the night of February 7, 2009. Brown's assault on girlfriend Rihanna would change the career trajectories of both, catapulting one to superstardom and launching the other on an unlikely comeback trail. Three years later, with the two stars are poised to return to the Grammy stage, MTV News looks back.
February 7, 2009: Rihanna hits the stage at a pre-Grammy party hosted by producer Timbaland in Los Angeles. The Bajan stunner performs her smash "Umbrella," among other tunes. Earlier that night, she's snapped looking cheerful with boyfriend Chris Brown at music honcho Clive Davis' annual Grammy bash.
February 8, 2009: Reports surface that Brown and a female passenger was involved in a car accident. E! News confirms that neither Rihanna nor Brown will appear at the Grammy Awards ceremony that night; both were scheduled to perform. The Los Angeles Police Department begin investigating a felony battery report against the Virginia crooner.
February 19, 2009: TMZ posts a gruesome photo of Rihanna taken by LAPD just after the February assault. The image of the singer — bruised, eyes swollen and mouth split — confirms what had been rumor up until then. Then-19-year-old Brown becomes the subject of public outrage. The backlash is only beginning, though, as radio stations across the country announce bans on Brown's music.
June 22, 2009: Brown has been mostly quiet, on the advice, he says, of his representatives. In May, Vibe publishes a cover story, "Tainted Love," delving into how the young couple unraveled. It's a more nuanced portrait that describes both Brown's and Rihanna's upbringings in households rife with domestic violence. It's also announced that Brown will strike a plea deal giving him 180 days of community service.
The same month, the "Forever" singer uploads a video apology to the Web: "I've told Rihanna countless times and I'm telling you today, I'm truly, truly sorry that I wasn't able to handle the situation both differently and better," he pleads.
September 2, 2009: Brown tapes an interview with CNN's "Larry King Live." Accompanied by his attorney, the singer — seldom off-pitch onstage — struggles to strike the right chord. But even his unfortunate choice of neckwear comes under scrutiny.
November 6, 2009: Rihanna sits down for a "20/20" special, detailing for anchor Diane Sawyer her assault at the hands of Brown.
November 9, 2009: Rihanna tells MTV's Sway she doesn't want to be the "domestic-violence spokesperson."
November 20, 2009: Rihanna drops the dark and introspective Rated R, sporting a razor-cut, tough-girl 'do on the album cover that sparks a frenzy of its own in Stateside hair salons. The LP is widely received as a rumination on her tragic relationship with Brown.
May 17, 2010: Unofficially on ice with his label, Jive, Brown joins with homey and YMCMB rapper Tyga for the Fan of a Fan mixtape. The project yields slow-burning smash singles like "Deuces" and "No Bullsh--."
February 10, 2011: Two years after the incident, the "Russian Roulette" singer agrees to loosen a restraining order against Brown. Breezy also earns high marks for progress from the judge in his ongoing probation case.
November 12, 2011: Red-tressed Rihanna drops Loud, and the Grammy-nominated album is a sunny departure from the brooding R. That month she and Brown also take to their respective Twitter accounts and signal in a series of posts that they're ready to move on from the assault narrative.
March 22, 2011: Livid over questions about his relationship with ex Rihanna, Brown smashes a chair in an ABC green room after a "Good Morning America" interview. The outburst threatens to overshadow what will be a highly successful release, the F.A.M.E album.
2011: It's a year of triumphs for the former duo: From awards to VMA performances, Grammy nods and critical acclaim, the Rihanna Navy and Team Breezy rally behind their idols.
January 19, 2012: After the blogosphere lights up with rumors that Rih and Brown are hooking up again, a rep for Brown denies the two have reunited, insisting the superstar exes are "just friends." Brown's representative also confirms he won't be doing any press this year.
February 8, 2012: Recording Academy announces that Brown will perform at Sunday's show; Rihanna has been confirmed for a collabo with rockers Coldplay. The revelation sets up the potential for a public reunion.

'I represent the majority of women and I'm very proud of that,' Grammy nominee says following Lagerfeld's controversial 'too fat' comment.

Adele probably won't be wearing Chanel to the Grammy Awards on Sunday. Days after Karl Lagerfeld shared his sentiments on Adele's weight and music in Metro, he is apologizing for it.
The Chanel creative director sparked controversy earlier this week when he commented on the Grammy nominee's looks and talent in the newspaper. "The thing at the moment is Adele," he said. "She is a little too fat, but she has a beautiful face and a divine voice."
Speaking once again to Metro, Lagerfeld issued a statement about his previous comments. "I'd like to say to Adele that I am your biggest admirer. Sometimes when you take a sentence out of the article, it changes the meaning of the thought. What I said was in relation to Lana Del Rey and the sentence has since been taken out of context from how it was originally published," he said. "I actually prefer Adele, she is my favorite singer and I am a great admirer of her. I lost over 30 kilos over 10 years ago and have kept it off. I know how it feels when the press is mean to you in regards to your appearance. Adele is a beautiful girl. She is the best. And I can't wait for her next CD."
Regardless of what Lagerfeld thinks about the Grammy-nominated pop star, in a new interview with People magazine, Adele opens up about her appearance. "I've never wanted to look like models on the cover of magazines. I represent the majority of women and I'm very proud of that," she said, according to the U.K. edition of Marie Claire.
"I'd lose weight if I was an actress and had to play a role where you're supposed to be 40 pounds lighter, but weight has nothing to do with my career. Even when I was signing [a contract], most of the industry knew if anyone ever dared say [lose weight] to me, they wouldn't be working with me."
The singer is up for six Grammy Awards at Sunday's show, including Album of the Year for her massively successful 21. She's also poised to take the stage at the show. It'll mark her first TV appearance since throat surgery last November.

'It was really hard. I love talking,' singer says during '60 Minutes' special.
By James Dinh
Sunday is shaping up to be quite a big day for Adele. Not only is the big-voiced diva up for six awards at the Grammys, but she will also open up about her recent throat surgery in a "60 Minutes" interview, airing on CBS immediately before the awards show.
In a teaser for the TV special, the British songstress speaks with Anderson Cooper about her vocal-cord procedure as well as how she dealt with the post-surgery restrictions. "They put lasers down your throat, cut off the polyp and kind of laser your hemorrhage back together and fix it," Adele wearily told the news anchor.
She was ordered not to speak a word throughout the months of November and December, but the songstress made the best of a not-so-bright situation by using notepads and a text-to-speech cellphone application to communicate with others.
"It was really hard. I love talking," she said.
The singer confessed that the advances in technology made it a little difficult to say what was really on her mind. "I love to swear, and most of them you can't swear on, but I found this one app where you can swear, so I'm still really getting my point across," she said with a smile.
Adele's road to recovery will come full-circle when the singer performs at Sunday night's Grammys. The U.K. songstress recently tweeted her excitement about returning to the stage: "Ima be, Ima be singing at the Grammys. It's been so long I started to forget I was a singer! I can't wait."

Andrew Garfield in the trailer for "Amazing Spider-Man"
Photo: Columbia
Now that's the Spider-Man we've been waiting for!
The friendly neighborhood wall-crawler swung into action early Tuesday (February 7) with a brand-new trailer for "The Amazing Spider-Man," director Marc Webb's reboot of the flagship Marvel superhero. Although we were afforded the opportunity to see the world from Spidey's own perspective in the last preview — quite literally, in fact — we honestly get an even better sense of what Webb is going for with his take on the "Spider-Man" franchise in this latest spot.
From web-shooters to reptilian rampages, there's a lot to cover in the newest look at "Spider-Man," so MTV Movies Managing Editor Josh Horowitz and MTV Splash Page Editor Josh Wigler used their combined spider-senses to dive into the "Amazing" new trailer.
Swing Away
We've known about the return of Spider-Man's web-shooters for a while now. But knowing and seeing are very different things — and yes, we like what we see, very much! The red-light visual cue of the shooters paired with mechanical sound effects is magic for the eyes and music to our ears. And actually seeing Spidey webbing around New York City — perhaps it's early, but "Amazing" looks to have the best web-slinging of any Spider-Man movie to date.
Lighten Up
Andrew Garfield is funny. Peter Parker is hilarious. But based on the first teaser, we weren't sure that Garfield's Parker would be in on the joke. Well, we were wrong! The "Social Network" actor shows his Spidey knowhow in this new trailer, cracking wise against criminals and spinning them up all the same. "Amazing" looks like a darker Spider-Man than the films we've seen before, sure, but there's room for levity. Garfield seems to fully understand that, and we're tremendously relieved.
The Untold Story
The new secret origin of Peter Parker remains mystifying. It seems that the disappearance of Peter's parents early in his childhood isn't just a peripheral plot point, but perhaps even at the core of how and why Peter becomes Spider-Man. It's a curious move likely to leave both casual and die-hard fans scratching their heads, at least for now. The new trailer doesn't clear things up much, so we'll have to wait until July to see how this mysterious web unravels.
Nolan-esque
Marc Webb gets characters. He gets emotion. Anyone who saw "(500) Days of Summer" knows this. Now we know he gets action as well. Web-slinging aside, the scene of maskless Spidey going toe-to-toe against a pack of cops is a brilliantly executed piece of action and gives us lots of confidence that Webb knows what he's doing in the fisticuffs department. Dare we say it, we even got a "Dark Knight" vibe from that scene.
King Koopa
The Lizard remains a divisive issue, even after this trailer. He's only seen in bits and pieces, but the few glimpses leave something to be desired. Hopefully the final FX work will make a difference. That said, looks aside, the sheer size and scale of the Lizard is something to admire. It holds great potential for some spectacular skyscraping scraps between Spidey and his reptilian nemesis, and we're holding out hope that the epic battles compensate for lackluster creature design.

Another day, another juicy segment of our interview with the cast of "The Hunger Games" to roll out and examine. Tuesday's (February 7) installment has a slight caveat, however. For those who have yet to read Suzanne Collins' book "Catching Fire" — the follow-up to "The Hunger Games" — please take this as a friendly warning that the proceeding comments from stars Jennifer Lawrence and Josh Hutcherson veer heavily into spoiler territory for the tentatively planned big-screen sequel.
When MTV News caught up with Lawrence and Hutcherson recently, we asked them what they hope to see in a sequel. Lawrence quickly brought up a very big step in the relationship between Katniss and Peeta.
"We get married!" the actress exclaimed, looking at Hutcherson and pointing to her ring finger with girlish enthusiasm.
"[It's] very exciting," Hutcherson said, though we detected a bit of hesitation in his voice.
Lawrence revealed that she did the "ring finger move" to Hutcherson whenever she wanted to annoy him on set. "God, I sound really annoying whenever I talk about myself in the past," she admitted. The Oscar nominee then apologized to Hutcherson, who seemed genuinely entertained by her commentary.
Looking even further ahead, past "Catching Fire," we asked about talk that the third book might be split into two films. "It's always hard, every time you convert a novel into movies, because you have to cut so much out," Lawrence said. "[So], in a weird way it's kind of a relief because you get to keep everything in there. It is a lot more work [to shoot four films] and we'll probably do them back-to-back."
Finally, we asked the two stars if they had to play another "Hunger Games" character besides their own which they would choose.
"I would probably say President Snow," Hutcherson said. "If I were President Snow, I could make some changes and give some power back to the people."
"Well, now I'm left with a goat," Jennifer joked of the dwindling character options. "Umm."
"Effie has great style," Hutcherson offered.
"Effie! That's it," Lawrence agreed about the pink-haired District 12 escort played by Elizabeth Banks. "God, yeah Effie. Thanks!"
Who would you have cast Jennifer and Josh as in "The Hunger Games," besides Katniss and Peeta? Tell us in the comments!

Robin Antin talks to MTV News about Kardashian-produced PCD reality show.
By Jocelyn Vena
One day after the new Pussycat Dolls lineup debuted during a Go Daddy Super Bowl commercial, the Dolls are already working on their next small-screen project — and this time, it includes reality-TV queen Kim Kardashian.
PCD creator Robin Antin stopped by the MTV Newsroom late last month, and she had some fun teases about what fans should expect from their in-the-works, forthcoming show. "We're developing a reality show with Kim Kardashian as an executive producer and Nigel Lythgoe," Antin said of Kim K. and the "American Idol" producer and "So You Think You Can Dance" judge. "He wanted to get into reality TV and was very interested in doing something with me. Obviously, with the Pussycat Dolls, he's always been a big fan."
Antin appears on "So You Think You Can Dance" from time to time, and as for Kim, she performed as a Doll back in 2008. Also, Antin said, Kardashian "understands reality more than anyone I know."
"Kim is one of my best friends and has been for many, many years and so supportive and said, 'I'd love to be a part of really showing your world, the empire of really what you have built and the world around you ... and all the girls that revolve around that.' "
With a new Doll lineup (which includes Chrystina Sayers from Girlicious, "So You Think You Can Dance" contestant Paula Van Oppen, Paradiso Girl and "Party Rock Anthem" collaborator Lauren Bennett, former Laker Girl Vanessa Curry and former Dallas Cowboys cheerleader Erica Jenkins), Antin thinks now is as good a time as any to put their ups and downs on tape.
"The engine of all Pussycat Dolls [projects] is the recording ground, and now having the new recording group, it made sense to focus on the launch of this new group and how that engine opens up all the doors for all the different things that I'm doing that are a part of the brand," she said. "So it's a really fun, interesting, wacky world inside what I do."
However, Antin noted, the show won't be about catfights or exploiting the lows that come with the highs. "It's not about showing all the drama and all the girls fighting," she said. "I'm not interested in that — although the reality is, there are things that happen and we're OK with showing the reality. We focus so much and want to inspire people to show that girls can work together and act like sisters and get along. And through dancing and singing, I want to inspire everyone. These girls are the next generation."

Critics praise Daniel Radcliffe for 'sturdy and self-sufficient' performance in his first post-Potter role.

Daniel Radcliffe makes his post-Potter debut in the new adaptation of Susan Hill's ghost story, "The Woman in Black." It's an old-fashioned horror movie that has earned mild praise from the critics, but a warmer welcome for its star and his prospects of an adult acting character.
We've rounded up a sampling of what the critics are saying about Daniel Radcliffe and "The Woman in Black," which opened Friday (February 3). Check out it below.
The Story
"Anchoring the drama is Arthur Kipps (Radcliffe), a sad-faced solicitor still grieving for his wife who died in childbirth four years earlier. Their son Joseph (Misha Handley) is wise beyond his few years and draws pictures of his dad looking mournful. The gloominess deepens when Kipps' boss threatens to fire him if he doesn't excel at an assignment. The job is to sort out the papers of a recently deceased old lady." — Claudia Puig, USA Today
The Star
"Radcliffe, for his part, carries off the role of Arthur with reasonable aplomb. If the 22-year-old actor seems a little young to be playing a solicitor and single father whose wife died in childbirth four years earlier, his performance is sturdy and self-sufficient enough, at least, to banish thoughts of Hermione and Hogwarts. He's all grown-up." — Michael O'Sullivan, The Washington Post
The Kids?
" 'No Country for Young Kids' would be just as suitable a title for 'The Woman in Black,' a hoot of an old-fashioned British horror film in which being under 10 years old is not a good thing." — Todd McCarthy, The Hollywood Reporter
The Scares
"Schooled in the art of the quiet boo, [Director James] Watkins fills the film with squeaking doors and floorboards, pools of black, long silences and an assortment of moldering toys. Less gore is more here, and what a relief. 'The Woman in Black' isn't especially scary, but it keeps you on edge, and without the usual vivisectionist imagery." — Manohla Dargis, The New York Times
The House
"The house is a masterpiece of production design, crumbling, forlorn, filled with the faded and jumbled Victorian possessions of doomed lifetimes. It has a unique feature audiences will not fail to remark upon: its own sound-effects crew. At every frightening moment, and there are many, the soundtrack paralyzes us with blasts of cacophonous noise. You wouldn't want to be in the theater next to this movie in a multiplex." — Roger Ebert, Chicago Sun-Times
The Final Word
"The work Radcliffe does here is primarily reactive. It's also quite good. I'd say he's on his way as a post-Potter entity, and 'The Woman in Black' deserves a stateside audience. I only wish Watkins had done without the 'WHUUNNNGGGG!!!!' sound effects whenever somebody or something suddenly appears in frame, further racking the nerves of our ectoplasmically beset hero." — Michael Phillips, The Chicago Tribune

Drew Barrymore, John Krasinksi and Kristen Bell discuss their new film, which follows the rescue of three gray whales in Alaska.

If you're looking for a feel-good film to see this weekend, look no further than "Big Miracle," the story of the real-life rescue of three gray whales trapped in ice near Point Barrow, Alaska, in 1988. Incredibly, the effort became an international issue that involved a rare collaboration between the United States and the Soviet Union and garnered worldwide media attention.
MTV News recently caught up with the three stars of the film, Drew Barrymore, John Krasinski and Kristen Bell, who explained the multi-generational appeal and importance of the story and the cause presented in the film.
"The whales have Twitter accounts," Krasinski joked when asked how the film might specifically appeal to MTV viewers. "So, streamlined information, done deal. Don't ask us, ask them. They'll talk all about it," he said with a smile. "It's a big movie that deals with participation, and with the election coming up and all these different things, and everybody is divided over this, that and the other, and everybody is angry about something. It's one of those moments where you get to say, 'I could just step in and lend my voice to something.' And it really helps, it makes you feel important and special that you're doing something. This movie sort of focuses on that completely, about how when you get a bunch of people together you can kind of do anything."
Barrymore added that the film's setting in the late '80s provides for a unique look back at our media and political cultures at the time.
"It's an interesting look back at how if things were a little different maybe we wouldn't exactly be where we are. But, it's not in a patronizing way, it's in a really interesting way," she said. "And it's amazing historically, like, you know, environmentally and politically. But, I think it's very true to what's going on now, that if people work together, whether it's protesting via Twitter for an important movement to change their country or to do something wonderful and important like saving whales. It's working together, so I think actually in 1987 when this takes place and what's going on right now today, they definitely have a connection."
Kristen Bell also focused on the warm, fuzzy aspects of the film, particularly how its positive message compares to the continually multiplying "train wreck" elements involved in other films and TV.
"I think it's a very positive story as opposed to many of the unendingly interesting train wrecks that are put on television or in films these days, which believe me, I'm not poo-pooing, but there's something very inspiring about a story where a bunch of different people come together for a common goal and actually accomplish it," Bell explained. "It's very, very inspiring, I think. And often times, news headlines or things that are written about in blogs, you know, reality television, it's not as inspiring as you want it to be, at least not for me. And it actually happened. It's historical, so you'll get smarter watching it. You'll also be inspired, so you'll be happier. What's the downfall? See the movie!"

<P>These days, it's hard to thumb through a magazine without stumbling across a famous sister act. The Kardashians and the Braxtons are reigning reality TV divas. The fashionable Fannings have young Hollywood on lock. And the Williams sisters have been known to <a href="http://rapfix.mtv.com/2012/01/11/timeline-drake-common-beef-sweet-to-stay-schemin">spark a rap beef</a> when they're not racking up grand slams. But for sheer show-stopping glam, few girl duos gleam brighter than the Knowleses. </p><div class="player-placeholder right" id="vid:724136.id:1676907" width="240" height="211"></div><p> Houston natives <a href="http://www.mtv.com/music/artist/knowles_beyonce/artist.jhtml">Beyoncé</a> and <a href="http://www.mtv.com/music/artist/knowles_solange/artist.jhtml">Solange</a> have each carved out distinctively impressive lanes, with B owning the pop diva crown while Brooklyn-dwelling Solo has been shutting it down as a turntablist with a playlist as enviable as her closet. And there's no sibling rivalry from this vantage point: Although Beyoncé celebrated the arrival of <a href="/news/articles/1676906/beyonce-jay-z-baby-born-ivy-blue.jhtml">baby girl Blue Ivy Carter</a> with husband Jay-Z just this month, she got a head start on motherhood by playing doting auntie to little sis Solange's one and only, 7-year-old Julez. So how does Solo plan to welcome big sister into the exclusive mommy club? "This may sound awful, but I'm excited to let the baby do whatever it wants," she teased in the <a href="http://news.instyle.com/2012/01/18/solange-knowles-blue-ivy-carter" target="_blank">February issue of <i>In Style</a>,</i> "in the same way my sister's done with my son." Eagle-eyed Beyoncé fans know that nephew Julez has made a number of cameos in the superstar's reel. Among the more adorable was his feature in her Nintendo DSi <a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lMMwCPdlwnw" target="_blank">spot</a>, which found the green-eyed cutie cuddled on a couch with Aunt B as she enjoys some rare offstage downtime. Solo added with a laugh. When the youngest Knowles isn't DJ'ing, she's hard at work on her forthcoming album, for which she promised the mag she would walk in the funky footprints of '80s hitmakers Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis. <i>Do you think Solange will make a good aunt to Blue Ivy? Hough also tells MTV News she's 'super excited' to reunite with 'Rock of Ages' co-star Russell Brand on the still-untitled Diablo project.

Julianne Hough

add link: Julianne Hough is building quite the film résumé. In the big-screen adaptation of Broadway musical "Rock of Ages", the triple threat sings and dances alongside Tom Cruise. But for her next role, she'll get to show off a serious side as a religious woman who begins to question everything she believes in.
"I'm actually in pre-production right now and I go to New Orleans in about three weeks and start shooting," Hough told MTV News of the upcoming Diablo Cody film. "It's really cool. It's very different than anything I've done and anything that people [have] seen me do."
As the leading lady in Cody's still-untitled project (originally called "Lamb of God"), Hough's character suffers a crisis of faith after surviving a tragic accident. She begins to live a life of sin in, well, Sin City, before finding God again. Hough revealed a bit more about the kind of pain and strife she'll have to act out in the film.
"It's strictly acting — no singing or dancing," she said. "In fact, I'm way more restricted in physicality because I actually play a girl that's been burned over two-thirds of her body, so I don't have a lot of movement, which is very different for me. So I'm excited. [It's] a big challenge and I like that. I have all the expression from my physicality trapped up [and it's] going to really help my emotion, I think."
Another thing that may ease her acting challenges is reuniting with "Rock of Ages" co-star Russell Brand in Cody's flick. "I'm super excited because in 'Rock of Ages' ... we had scenes together, but we never actually spoke to each other in the scenes," she explained. "So it'll be a whole new thing."
"Ages," which also stars a pitch-perfect Tom Cruise, Catherina Zeta-Jones and Alec Baldwin, opens in June. Hough's dance flick "Footloose" hits DVD on March 6.

The magic of Madonna's parallel romantic storytelling appears to have been lost on critics.
By Kara Warner
Madonna directing "W.E."
Photo: The Weinstein Co.
In addition to her heavily hyped performance at Super Bowl XLVI this weekend, Madonna has been busy writing and directing her second movie, "W.E.," which follows the real-life love story of American divorcée Wallis Simpson and King Edward VIII during the '30s, as well as a parallel story of a fictional American woman set in 1998 who became obsessed with Simpson's story.
The film has received some early awards-season love, including a Golden Globe win for Best Original Song and another Globe nomination for Best Original Score, but judging by its 17 percent fresh rating at Rotten Tomatoes, the magic of the romance seems to have been lost on critics. Read on as we sift through the "W.E." reviews:
The Parallel Storytelling
"Madonna and co-screenwriter Alek Keshishian try to fuse the threads of two very different tales, set several eras apart, to provide elucidation on the nature of love. But there's not much illumination to be had. There is, however, plenty of pretentious folderol. Clothes, jewelry and expensive trinkets are fraught with superficial symbolism. The more intriguing of the two stories centers on the 1930s romance and marriage of chic American divorcée Wallis Simpson and Great Britain's King Edward VIII, who abdicated the throne to marry her. (The title stands for Wallis and Edward.) ... Jumping forward to 1998, the second story is about Wally Winthrop (Abbie Cornish) and her fascination with Simpson. Married to a self-absorbed and abusive psychiatrist, Wally roams New York City in a state of gloomy reverie. She forges an unlikely bond with Evgeni (Oscar Isaac), a guard at Sotheby's, where she goes often to look at the royal paraphernalia about to be auctioned. The disparate strands of the two stories never make much sense the way they're braided together. Presumably, the more Wally learns about the sacrifices Wallis made, the more she is emboldened to follow her heart and leave her own unhappy marriage. Yet what she uncovers about the Duke and Duchess is not always pretty." — Claudia Puig, USA Today
Madonna as Writer/Director
"The upshot is that instead of a film about a love that conquered a king and nearly undid a kingdom, Madonna has come up with a female friendship movie, which would be fine if she weren't busy trying to prove her art-film bona fides. At her entertainer best, Madonna distilled ideas and emotions into solid pop gold, transmitting a worldview through songs, music videos and her shape-shifter persona. The movies, by contrast, have largely defeated her both as an actress and as a director. As a mystical female friendship movie, 'W.E.' has its pull, but it never coheres, shredded by its editing and its pretensions, like Mrs. Simpson dancing to the Sex Pistols with a woman in African tribal regalia because, I'm guessing, Madonna likes the way Sofia Coppola used New Order's music in 'Marie Antoinette.' " — Manohla Dargis, The New York Times
The Chick-Flick Factor
" 'W.E.' (which interlocks with 'The King's Speech' — Bertie pops up in a couple of scenes here just as David appeared in that one) is very much a woman's picture. The men, except the Sotheby's security guard, mainly serve as obstacles or targets. That viewpoint is daring and kind of refreshing; a recent study noted that some two-thirds of the dialogue in Hollywood movies is spoken by men (in my experience, that is a reversal of reality). In the Wallis portions, Madonna presents a frank, unashamed defense of gold-digging, though she does unconvincing penance for this in the Wally story, in which the bride proves lonely and bored in her Upper East Side castle. After more than 40 years of feminism, the gold-digging subtext remains as central to female fantasy as it is in Jane Austen novels, and it's implicit in most of those rom-coms in which, just by sheer coincidence, true love happens with the owner of a chain of bookstores, or the millionaire a gal meets while working the streets. If the woman virtuously chooses love over money, she gets the lucre anyway." — Kyle Smith, The New York Post
The Final Word, Pro-Con Style
"If anyone, Madonna certainly understands the crazy pull of celebrity obsession, and it's an intriguingly romantic premise she presents, interweaving Wally's story with the Duchess', often triggered by the modern woman's handling of certain artifacts belonging to the late, almost-Queen of England, who even begins to appear to her in hallucinations, to offer world-weary advice and/or disapproval. The director tells the Duchess' story with surprising verve, historical accuracy and style, a huge improvement over the nastily cartoonish way the couple was represented in the overrated 'The King's Speech' last year. There are a few clichéd missteps, as when Edward's mother, Queen Mary (Judy Parfitt), clucks, 'This is a pretty kettle of fish!' over her son's scandal, but, for the most part, the historical sequences have a thrilling élan, aided by the crack photography, art direction and especially Arianne Phillips' superbly accurate costume design for this most chic of fashion eras. Taking a cue, perhaps, from Sofia Coppola's 'Marie Antoinette,' Madonna has also effectively interpolated modern pop-rock music along with the usual Deco cocktail standards of the era." — David Noh, FilmJournal.com
"You can't call 'W.E.' a total disaster; it's too pretty, too nonsensical and finally too insignificant for that. Rather, it's a heavily decorated and overly complicated exercise in female narcissism, which in its plotless meandering fashion seeks to draw a mystical connection between an unhappy Manhattan wife and Wallis Simpson (Andrea Riseborough), the Baltimore socialite who married King Edward VIII. Riseborough gives a richly enjoyable performance as the prickly, strange and not especially beautiful American who pulled a king and emperor from his throne, and some of the 1930s scenes are pretty fun, after the fashion of outtakes from 'The King's Speech' turned into music videos or haute couture shoots. Madonna and co-writer Alek Keshishian (who directed 'Truth or Dare' way back in 1991) go right at the historical reputation of Wallis and Edward as Nazi sympathizers, and to the extent that 'W.E.' is an attempt to rehabilitate them at least it has a clear agenda." — Andrew O'Hehir, Salon.com
