'The Descendants' and 'Moneyball' seem to be leading the race, but who will take home gold?
By Kevin P. Sullivan

Woody Allen has dominated the race to decide the year's best screenplay, winning the Golden Globe for "Midnight in Paris," but when the Academy Awards split up the category into Adapted and Original, the former proves much harder to predict.
Based on critic and guild awards, the competition for Best Adapted Screenplay comes down to two films: "Moneyball" and "The Descendants." Each has won significant prizes in the past few months, so the category could result in one of the night's few genuine surprises.
Here are our predictions for Best Adapted Screenplay:
Who Will Win: Alexander Payne, Nat Faxon and Jim Rash for "The Descendants." Unfortunately, this will be the film's consolation prize in a night dominated by Jean Dujardin and "The Artist." Without all of the hype surrounding Michel Hazanavicius' silent film, the story of a soon-to-be widower in Hawaii would be the odds-on favorite to take Best Picture and Actor. True to his reputation, Payne and his co-writers crafted a subtle, sad and touching film that keeps you laughing the entire way through. He has proven himself to be one of our most consistent auteurs. And although Aaron Sorkin and Steven Zaillian's screenplay for "Moneyball" deserves its spot as a front-runner, Sorkin's win for "The Social Network" only happened a year ago.
Who Should Win: Bridget O'Connor and Peter Straughan for "Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy." Straughan and his late wife O'Connor faced the challenge of not only adapting a beloved novel, but one that had been previously adapted into a beloved miniseries. In transforming John le Carré's book for the screen, the writing team crafted a story that confused audiences but never entirely lost them. The film broke box-office records with its limited release and proved successful despite its complexity. The screenplay for "Tinker Tailor" stands out not only because of the tragic story of the married couple who wrote it — O'Connor died of cancer shortly after finishing the script — but the level of success that came out of such a difficult assignment.
Who should win Best Adapted Screenplay? Sound off below!

The ?She?s the Man? stud and his beautiful wife looked to be in good spirits as they strolled through the terminal together.
As for his new flick ?The Vow,? Channing told press it?s not just your average romantic chick flick.
?It?s told through the guy's perspective. You don?t just need some horrible accident to not really know someone in a relationship, you can kind of grow apart and they cannot recognize them, and to see somebody try so hard to get back to that is cool.?

This week's Hobnobbing celebrates Seneca Crane's beard, Peeta's advice and more Web wonders.
By Amy Wilkinson
Wes Bentley as Seneca Crane in "The Hunger Games"
Photo: Lionsgate
Three years can feel like an eternity. That's how long "The Hunger Games" fans will have sat around sharpening their arrows between Lionsgate purchasing the film rights to Suzanne Collins' novel and the movie ultimately swooping into theaters March 23. But it's also been a productive 36 or so months for the series' acolytes, evidenced by the plethora of Panem-centric memes that have cropped up online to amuse, inform and enthrall.
From Seneca Crane's beard to Katniss' orange backpack, let's celebrate the things that have made this infernal wait a little less painful. (Special thanks to Twitter friends who sent in their recommendations.)
Seneca Crane's beard
Wes Bentley's flame-shaped fuzz was destined for Internet infamy. Following the debut of "The Hunger Games" full-length trailer, the stylized scruff seemed to be one of the hottest topics of conversation. A Facebook page (and insightful interview with Hollywood Crush) followed, proving the beard had staying power — even if it didn't stay on Bentley's face forever. "I would have loved to have kept the beard, but that beard took two hours to groom every day," he told MTV News. "It's such a cool look. Ve Neill, the makeup designer, did such an amazing job. It's exciting that it's getting that kind of attention."
Advice Peeta
Peeta is the wisest baker's son we know. Need proof? Take a gander at Advice Peeta, recommended by @TheHobOrg, where the disembodied head of Josh Hutcherson dispenses pithy platitudes and nuggets of wisdom. "Remember who the real enemy is: Panera," one reads, while another declares, "I set fireeeeeee to the bread." Aw, Peeta's an Adele fan! We knew it.
Lord Buttercup
District 12's male tribute isn't the only character pontificating online. Even Prim's mangy tomcat is getting in on the action. Similarly styled to Advice Peeta, Lord Buttercup, recommended by @mirandahakim, has plenty to say too, like "I am the Mockingjay. LOL JK I'm a cat." The busy feline also manages his own Twitter account, @LordButtercup. Because the revolution needs social-media-minded mongrels.
Effie's shoes
One of the newer (and perhaps less prevalent) memes, recommended by @HGgirlonfire, is a foot fetishist's best friend. Effie Trinket's gold booties (supposedly fashioned after an Alexander McQueen design) made their debut on the recently launched Capitol Couture. And our shoe envy will never be the same.
Katniss' orange backpack
Clearly, "Hunger Games" fans are a fashion-conscious bunch, because when the first "Hunger Games" teaser debuted, and it appeared Katniss' bright backpack had been replaced by a duller version, die-hards were not pleased. Thankfully, further peeks have confirmed that the fiery bag, which Katniss grabs at the beginning of the Games, is indeed a player. And, as recommended by @pikko, it continues to be celebrated on Facebook.

Alessandra Ambrosio and her adorable daughter Anja, 3, enjoyed a mother-daughter day as they spent some time together walking and running errands in Santa Monica, Calif. on Wednesday (February 15).
Two duo wore matching black-on-black ensembles, with pregnant Alessandra ? she and Jamie Mazur are expecting their second child in four months ? covering herself up in a white shawl. But bump-watchers rejoice - earlier in the day the Victoria's Secret model was spotted in a pink shirt that showed her growing belly.

She was just revealed as the new cover girl for the Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Issue, and Kate Upton can add another front page to her resume - as she adorns the cover of the March 2012 issue of Esquire.
The 19-year-old bombshell teamed up with "Mad Men" hunk Jon Hamm for the publication's latest installment while posing for an oh-so-sexy spread lining the inside pages.
Meanwhile, highlights from Miss Upton's interview are as follows. For more, be sure to pay a visit to Esquire!
On her YouTube dance 'The Dougie' helping her career:
"People want to see personality. Otherwise they make assumptions, like... Yeah, she's pretty, but she's probably a b**ch.' That's why everyone likes the video. It's me. It wasn't planned for Twitter or YouTube. It's, like, real."
On accidentally taking some herpes medicine in December:
"I had a cold, and I got handed the wrong second prescription at the pharmacy. They said, Oh here's your other prescription, and I was like, What?! So I went home and I looked at the first prescription and said, Oh well, free drugs! And I OD'd. Luckily my friend was there to help me, but I only got better yesterday."
On not quite being an heiress to the Whirlpool fortune:
"My grand-grandfather did start a pretty big company, but when it went public, the Upton family really didn't get a lot from it. They were farmers and didn't get the best deal ? damn New Yorkers came in. In our town in Michigan, the Upton family is everything that counts, but growing up, my mom always told us, Don't tell anyone about this. Just so we wouldn't have to live under that. So we could be ourselves."
On the many tweets that make reference to her:
"I like to see all of it," she says. "Even the bad stuff."

Lionsgate hopes the trailer will draw even more fans to 'Hunger Games,' the biggest investment in the company's history.

Fans of YA-book-to-blockbuster-film adaptations rejoice; you're in for a treat! Lionsgate Entertainment has announced that the trailer for the fifth and final film in the "Twilight Saga," "Breaking Dawn - Part 2," will debut exclusively before "The Hunger Games" when it hits theaters on March 23.
The synergistic trailer release marks Lionsgate's first big move to court the rabid fanbase that's turned the "Twilight Saga" into a $2.5 billion-grossing worldwide box-office phenomenon.
" 'The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn Part 2' trailer will debut exclusively on every 'Hunger Games' print on its opening night for what will be Lionsgate's largest release ever," Lionsgate chief executive Jon Feltheimer said (via the Los Angeles Times) in a conference call Friday (February 10).
Lionsgate acquired Summit Entertainment, the production company for "Twilight," in January. The hope appears to be that excitement over the "Breaking Dawn - Part 2" trailer will draw even more people in to see the already much-anticipated "Hunger Games," which, with its $100 million production budget and three planned sequels, is the biggest investment in Lionsgate's history.
Fans of Suzanne Collins' bestselling YA trilogy are counting the days until the release of the first Jennifer Lawrence-starring film, though its stars are trying to avoid all the pre-release buzz. "It was crazy. It had so much buildup for something I've done so many times before," Josh Hutcherson recently told MTV News. "Every other time it's been, 'Oh, another movie.' This time, it had so much going on before the production even started."
"Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn - Part 2" hits theaters on November 16.

Our experts take a look at A-list artists who dazzled in glamorous gowns and over-the-top looks.

Despite the shocking death of Whitney Houston on Saturday, the biggest stars in music graced the Grammy red carpet Sunday to not only honor the late icon, but also to celebrate one of the biggest nights in music and fashion.
A-list artists brought both subdued, glamorous looks and the typical over-the-top statement-making Grammy styles.
The lady of the night, Adele, sparkled from head to toe on the red carpet in a black Armani gown, showing off a lighter hair color in her first performance since having vocal-cord surgery.
MTV Style picks their best-dressed at the Grammys.
Fellow British artist Jessie J shined on her first Grammy red carpet, turning heads in a gray Julien Macdonald gown. "I just wanted to wear something that I don't usually wear, which is silver, something long and very heavy," Jessie told MTV News. "I feel like a disco ball at the event."
Katy Perry was feeling blue at the Grammys, matching her blue hairstyle to a light-blue, long-sleeved Elie Saab gown. "One of my absolute favorites of the night was Katy Perry," Celebuzz producer Rachel Maresca told MTV News. "She paired her bold, blue hair with a very light-blue Elie Saab lace gown. She looked stunning, and it's a more subdued look for her. We don't always see that out of her, but it is very glamorous."
Another statement dress belonged to Fergie, who called her Jean Paul Gaultier couture gown her "safe choice," which it was far from. The vibrant orange lace gown allowed her black bra and panties to see through, but according to Fergie, when Gaultier gives you a custom look, you have to wear it.
"When Jean Paul Gaultier couture gown comes and it's shipped to you and it fits, you wear it," Fergie told our own Sway Calloway.
Yet, out of all these amazing artists, it seems the fashion night belonged to Rihanna. Jaws dropped as she worked the carpet in a one-of-a-kind Armani dress that she helped design. With a plunging neckline and a deep halter, this dress hugged every curve to perfection.
Stick with MTV News for all the news on Whitney Houston's tribute, the Grammy red-carpet fashion, Grammy winners and more until the hangover wears off!

On Thursday, it was confirmed that the high-profile couple filed an application with the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office to <a href="/news/articles/1678877/beyonce-jay-z-blue-ivy-trademark.jhtml">trademark Blue Ivy's name</a>. The patent is intended to prevent the use of their daughter's name by non-related parties. Couple likely 'trying to protect what they rightfully own or created,' family law expert tells MTV News.

<P><a href="/music/artist/knowles_beyonce/artist.jhtml">Beyoncé</a> and <a href="/music/artist/jay_z/artist.jhtml">Jay-Z</a> have filed an application with the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office to protect their month-old baby's name and reserve it for future use, MTV News has confirmed. The superstar couple reportedly sought the trademark to stop the use of Blue Ivy's name by others. </p><div class="player-placeholder right" id="vid:725377.id:1676907" width="240" height="211"></div><p> It's a smart move, according to family law attorney and author <a href="http://www.vikkiziegler.com/" target="_blank">Vikki Ziegler</a>. "[Seeking the trademark] forestalls competitors from using the child's name and or third parties from attempting to sell the baby's name back to the couple," Ziegler told MTV News. "They are likely trying to protect what they rightfully own or created, shall we say, by trademarking Blue Ivy's name." The application to trademark Blue Ivy Carter's name, filed by BGK Trademark Holdings (Beyoncé's company) is currently pending but will likely be approved because, as the <a href="http://www.washingtonpost.com/blogs/reliable-source/post/blue-ivy-the-trademark-feds-move-fast-on-rights-to-beyonce-and-jay-zs-babys-name/2012/02/03/gIQAOTDGnQ_blog.html" target="_blank"><i>Washington Post</i></a> reports, parents are legally authorized to trademark the names of their minor children. "In essence, it's a trademark for a brand, and this brand is expected to be one hot commodity — just look at Blue Ivy's parents," Ziegler said. "Anyone else that tried to use the name after the trademark was approved could be sued and held liable for damages." </p><div class="player-placeholder right" id="vid:724613.id:1676907" width="240" height="211"></div><p> While the Patent Office looks fondly on attempts to trademark the name of one's own child, attempts to do the same with the names of other people's kids are another story, as two designers learned when they sought — just days after Blue Ivy's birth — to trademark the baby's name for their own use. Applications from fashion designer Joseph Mbeh to patent "Blue Ivy Carter NYC" and by an unnamed designer to trademark "Blue Ivy Carter Glory IV" for a fragrance line were denied by the Patent Office, which noted in its decision that the name belonged to a "very famous infant" and consumers would wrongly assume that any products bearing the name had been approved by Beyoncé and Jay-Z. Ziegler noted that the trademark would "protect against others using the child's name as a brand of merchandise in the same marketplace," so it will not impact the "Blue Ivy" trademark held by a clothing boutique in Sturgeon Bay, Wisconsin. The store filed to trademark <i>its</i> name on January 19, 2011, a year before Queen B and Jay made the name famous. They received approval on August 23 — five days before <a href="/news/articles/1669849/beyonce-pregnant-vmas.jhtml">Beyoncé announced her pregnancy</a> at the MTV Video Music Awards. <i>What do you think about Beyoncé and Jay-Z trademarking Blue Ivy's name? <P>Maybe <a href="http://www.mtv.com/music/artist/spears_britney/artist.jhtml">Britney Spears</a>' lucky number is 30. More than a decade into her career, Spears re-emerged as a <a href="/news/articles/1675474/britney-spears-femme-fatale-favorite-album.jhtml"><i>Femme Fatale,</i></a> giving fans a fist-pumping album, embarking on a flashy tour and dropping more memorable music videos. Britney Spears fandom was reenergized as the singer came out of her shell, opening up about this phase in her career as well her personal life in several high-profile interviews. So it's probably not surprising that Spears will cap off the year at #4 on MTV News' <a href="/news/articles/1676177/newsmakers-2011-lady-gaga-amy-winehouse.jhtml">Top Newsmakers of 2011</a> list, just behind Lil Wayne. But no vid stirred up as much controversy as her <a href="/news/articles/1672795/britney-spears-criminal-video-director.jhtml">"Criminal" clip</a>, which featured real-life boyfriend <a href="/news/articles/1676120/britney-spears-is-engaged.jhtml">(now fiancé) Jason Trawick</a> — and his abs. "At the end of the day, Jason killed it," Piliero told MTV News of Trawick's cameo. "That was one of those things I was really stoked [about], as much as I went into it like, 'Wow, he's not an actor. This is going to be interesting,' but I really do like a challenge, and I really do like the idea that I'm a director and my job is to direct and get the performance. For me, it was a fun challenge to be like, 'I'm gonna make sure that you are awesome,' and he was." Between video shoots, Spears hit the road with <a href="/news/articles/1668836/nicki-minaj-britney-spears-tour.jhtml">the likes of Nicki Minaj</a>, Joe Jonas, and DJ Pauly D. Spears fully embraced her sensuality on the <i>Femme Fatale</i> Tour, a spectacular show full of costume changes, elaborate stage setups and stunning mini-films. </p><div class="player-placeholder right" id="vid:638813.id:1661123" width="240" height="211"></div><p> And while much of the 2011 VMA buzz was about <a href="/news/articles/1669849/beyonce-pregnant-vmas.jhtml">Beyoncé's baby bump</a> and <a href="/news/articles/1669843/lady-gaga-you-and-i-video-music-awards-performance.jhtml">Jo Calderone</a>, Spears stole the spotlight by walking away with a Moonman for Best Pop Video and the prized <a href="/news/articles/1669873/britney-spears-vma-tribute.jhtml">Video Vanguard Award</a>. She also had tongues wagging after an onstage kiss from Jo (a.k.a. Lady Gaga), just before she was honored with an electrifying dance tribute that highlighted some of biggest career moments. "It was really crazy. I had no idea what to expect," Spears told us backstage at the VMAs. "The kids were amazing and so entertaining, and it was a really fun night. It was really cool. I was like, 'Wow, that's really sweet!' " As 2011 came to a close, Spears wrapped up her tour, and MTV News threw her a birthday bash in the form of the <a href="http://www.mtv.com/content/news/2011/britney30/index.jhtml">"30 Videos for 30 Years"</a> tournament. The competition was heated but in the end, Spears' iconic "I'm a Slave 4 U" took home the prize. And just when it seemed things couldn't get any better, <a href="/news/articles/1676167/britney-spears-jason-trawick-engaged-timeline.jhtml">Britney confirmed she was engaged</a> to Trawick after dating for two years. She showed off her Neil Lane ring during a celebratory weekend in Las Vegas. <b>MTV continues our <a href="http://www.mtv.com/specials/best_of/">Best of 2011</a> coverage by looking back at the biggest pop-culture stories of the year. Madonna and her children, Rocco, 11, Lourdes, 15, Mercy, 5, and David, 6, were seen out together in New York City on Friday night (February 10).
The singer was dressed casually in a light jacket and jeans while she had her arm around Rocco. It was cute that the boys both wore white sweatsuits!

<P><a href="http://www.mtv.com/music/artist/lady_gaga/artist.jhtml" target="_blank">Lady Gaga</a> is known for being ostentatious, outrageous and making the biggest entrance possible. But for a star that has made her name for shocking our senses, Mother Monster's newest venture is decidedly low-key. </p><div class="player-placeholder right" id="id:1669247" width="240" height="211"></div><p> After dropping several mentions in interviews over the past few months about a new restaurant she planned to launch with her father, Joseph Germanotta, Joanne Trattoria will finally open its doors on Wednesday. The modest Italian neighborhood eatery on West 68th Street in New York was described by <a href="http://www.nytimes.com/2012/01/25/dining/lady-gagas-parents-to-open-joanne-trattoria.html?_r=2" target="_blank"><I>The New York Times</I></a> as having a "well-stocked bar, a cozy back patio and seating for about 70 people." The walls are covered with scenes of the Tuscan countryside, and near a fireplace at the entrance, diners will see some Germanotta family photos hanging by a front booth. The restaurant will be run by Joseph and Gaga's mother, Cynthia, and her proud pop admitted that his daughter "just generates a lot of sizzle," helping to get the word out about the venture. The chef and partner in the business is Art Smith, who met Gaga at a taping for the "Oprah Winfrey Show." Smith was Winfrey's personal chef for several years. The name was inspired by Joseph's late sister, Joanne, who died of lupus at age 19. Not only is "Joanne" Gaga's middle name, but in a number of interviews the singer has <a href="http://newsroom.mtv.com/2011/10/31/lady-gaga-dad-joseph-restaurant-joanne/" target="_blank">opened up</a> about her strong connection with her late aunt. "I thought I was gonna die," she said last year. "I wanted to be the artists I loved, like Mick Jagger and Andy Warhol -- and I thought the only way to do it was to live the lifestyle. But then I realized my father's sister Joanne, who'd died at 19, had instilled her spirit in me. She was a painter and a poet -- and I had a spiritual vision I had to finish her business." The <I>Times</I> noted that Gaga is not officially a part-owner of the restaurant, which Joseph said the family could have afforded to open even if his daughter had not risen to global fame. It has long been his dream to open the eatery, he said, and visitors at Joanne will dine on "Southern Italian," given that Smith is from the South and the Germanottas are Italian. That means they will chow down on dishes such as "Papa G's chicken," traditional offerings like osso buco inspired by Joanne and "Cynthia's salad," named for Gaga's mother. Hoping to temper fans' expectations, Joseph said he wasn't sure if he'd post current pics of Gaga among the family photos. Maybe, he said, just an old one in which she's not as recognizable. And though he's happy to have his eldest get the word out about the family business, if fans make the trek expecting to see a trophy case with VMAs and Grammys, "It's not going to happen," he warned.</p>
