Katy Perry Raves About 'SNL' Musical Guest Robyn

Perry tells MTV News the Swedish star is 'the epitome of effortless cool.'
By Jocelyn Vena

NEW YORKKaty Perry knows a thing or two about being the musical guest on "Saturday Night Live". But this week, she steps up into the role of hostess, and she's welcoming her former California Dreams tourmate and Swedish pop powerhouse Robyn as the show's musical guest.

When MTV News caught up with the pop stars during rehearsals Thursday, they opened up about reuniting for the late-night show. "It was a pleasure to do rehearsals here today in the 'SNL' studio," Robyn told us. "You're gonna see what you always see: me, like, dancing and giving it my all."

While Perry and Robyn, an "SNL" first-timer, hung out a bit during a promo shoot — co-starring the show's city correspondent, Stefon (played by Bill Hader) — she said she hadn't yet gotten some words of wisdom from the California Gurl.

But when we asked Perry if she had any advice for her pal, she didn't think she had much to offer.

"I don't need to give her advice," she said. "She needs to give me advice. She's cool, dude. She makes everyone cooler. ... She's just, like, the epitome of effortless cool, like you look at her wardrobe and you think, 'I don't think I could wear that,' but she wears it and she just owns it."

There's one look you may see Perry sporting on the show that was inspired by the singer. "She's always wearing platform shoes, whether it's, like, creepers or Prada shoes. And she was wearing them way back when, in the beginning of the tour," she said. "And now Prada's doing them; everyone's wearing them. Rihanna's wearing them. I'm wearing them after all of the convincing, so she's kind of the tastemaker. It's gonna be a great show because of that."

What songs are you hoping Robyn performs Saturday night? Let us know in the comments!

Beyonce/ Mary J. Blige Duet Was Meant For 4

'She sent it through her A&R people to give to me,' MJB says of My Life II's 'Love a Woman.'
By Rob Markman, with reporting by Vanessa White Wolf

Not sure how to keep your woman happy? Just ask Mary J. Blige and Beyoncé. The two divas lay out a tutorial on how to court the fairer sex with "Love a Woman," from MJB's upcoming My Life II ... The Journey Continues, Act I. But fans may be surprised to learn that the long-overdue collaboration was nearly a one-woman affair.

B initially recorded the song for her4 LP, but thought it would be a better fit as a duet with Mary.

"It was a song she recorded for her album that didn't fit her album and she sent it through her A&R people to give to me," Mary revealed to MTV News. "When the song came, her voice was on it completely and it was just amazing and I wasn't sure that they wanted to give me this record because it was so amazing."

The soothing track starts off with Mary sweetly singing, "So you think you know how to love a woman/ But I think it's still some things you need to know." As the flowery instrumental builds with a serene piano melody and accentuating horns, MJB goes on to warn that a woman needs more than material things. B turns up the heat demanding that she needs "more than sex," she needs to be made love to. From there, the song plays as a lyrical how-to. Communication is a must, as is respect, but coming home late and being a one-minute man is a no-no.

While both the Queen of Hip-Hop Soul and an expecting Queen B display good chemistry on the song, a video for the track may be hard to pull off. "I'm sure 'Love a Woman' would be a single but I can't really trouble Beyoncé right now; she's pregnant and I'm sure she's doing her stuff," Mary said. "So whenever she's ready, if she's ever ready, I'm ready and it'll be great."

Should MJB and B shoot a video for "Love a Woman"? Tell us in the comments!

'Drive' Is MTV's #2 Movie Of 2011

Hard to describe and hard to forget, the film (and Ryan Gosling's Driver) oozed cool.
By Kevin P. Sullivan

Ryan Gosling in "Drive"
Photo: FilmDistrict

In October, a Michigan woman filed a lawsuit against FilmDistrict for misleading her about the film "Drive." She claimed the movie's trailer promised a more action-packed film and "promoted the film 'Drive' as very similar to the 'Fast and Furious,' or similar, series of movies."

But the suit succeeded in only one respect: It perfectly described why we love "Drive" and why it's #2 on MTV's Best Movies of 2011 list.

Everything about "Drive" subverts expectations. The main character, played by Ryan Gosling, doesn't have a name besides "Driver" and rarely speaks. We root for him despite knowing nothing about him or what's going on behind his stares. All the audience has to go off is his affection for his down-the-hall neighbor Irene, played by Carey Mulligan, and his sudden, violent outbursts, which surprise with horror levels of gore.

This is all the more shocking when you consider that for the first 30 minutes of the movie, the story plays out in a slow and quiet way, more like a romantic comedy than a crime thriller. Driver's relationship with Irene puts the audience so off its guard that when the violence finally erupts, it's instantly unforgettable.

Director Nicolas Winding Refn sets up the film's opening chase sequence in a way that looks and feels like a "Fast and Furious" movie, but as soon as it starts, it stops — literally. Driver parks the getaway car to remain out of sight. It's a subtle move that sets the tone for the rest of the movie.

And speaking of tone, what other film captured as much attention for its use of music and atmosphere? The synth-laced soundtrack by Cliff Martinez and a collection of electro-pop songs had everyone talking. Out of context, the choice for the music doesn't make sense, but the second "Nightcall" drops in over the neon-pink title, all the pieces come together.

When describing the movie to others, most people struggle until they stumble upon the word "cool." "Drive" is cool in a way that most action movies with their overly muscular heroes and explosions could only dream of being. Gosling and Refn captured an exact balance of warmth and coldness, emotion and indifference that makes the film's look, sound, story and characters feel like instant classics.

All of these elements would make for a great film, but that would mean ignoring a stellar supporting cast. Albert Brooks oozed menace and dark humor as the villainous pizza parlor owner/low-level mob boss Bernie Rose, and Bryan Cranston continued his streak as the most likable actor working today as Driver's mentor Shannon.

For all its surprises and unexpected turns, "Drive" is our second favorite movie of the year. It took tired movie clichés and flipped them on their heads to make one of the most original and hard-to-forget moviegoing experiences in recent memory.

Stick with MTV as we count down the Best of 2011, including the top Artists, Songs, Live Performances and EDM Artists of the year.

Check out everything we've got on "Drive."

Golden Globes Shocks And Snubs: Ryan Gosling, 'Dragon Tattoo,' More

Nominations overlook 'The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo,' 'Breaking Bad' and 'Bridesmaids' breakout Melissa McCarthy.
By Josh Wigler

The 2012 Golden Globes nominations are here, and as always, there are plenty of surprises of both the good and bad variety. Some of our favorite actors walked away with unexpected nominations, while others were shockingly left off the ballot. Movies we did not anticipate making the cut broke past our expectations, while several films we considered shoe-ins were shut out entirely. In other words, it's just another year at the Globes!

From Ryan Gosling to "The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo," here are 10 of the biggest shocks and snubs among this year's Golden Globes nominees:

Shock: Ryan Gosling Goes for Two
There's no question that this was a big year for the Gos. Not only did he break up a street fight in the viral video seen 'round the world, he also acted the heck out of three great movies: "Drive," "The Ides of March" and "Crazy, Stupid, Love." We've been on the Gosling train for years now, and it's fantastic to see him getting recognized by the Globes this year. But it's what he was nominated for that left us shocked. If the choice were up to us, Gosling would be nominated for "Drive," not "Ides." There's not a lot of Globes love for Nicolas Winding Refn's phenomenal thriller, save for a much-deserved Albert Brooks supporting nom. But, hey, beggars can't be choosers. We're more than happy with the double-header for our guy!

Shock: "March" On
While we're on the topic, nobody here on the MTV Movies team would have predicted that "Ides of March" would get so much love at the Globes this year. It's a strong movie by all accounts, but worthy of nominations in three major categories (Best Actor for Gosling, Best Director for George Clooney and Best Picture Drama)? We're not so sure. Still, we love Clooney, and we love that he's getting further awards attention besides his predestined "Descendants" nomination. And there's no need to repeat our Gosling gush.

Snub: Melissa McCarthy Misses Out
It's great to see "Bridesmaids" nominated for Best Picture Musical or Comedy and Kristen Wiig in the Best Actress category — the R-rated comedy was one of our very favorite movies of the year, after all — but we're absolutely floored and disappointed by the Hollywood Foreign Press Association's snubbing of Melissa McCarthy. Wiig is wonderful in the film, and without her, "Bridesmaids" would not exist. But without McCarthy, "Bridesmaids" would not be excellent. She was the breakout star. She brought the thunder. She not only deserved a nomination, but arguably a win. Her absence from this year's Globes is almost as embarrassing as what went down in the bridal shop.

Snub: Globes Hates Tattoos
We're thrilled that Rooney Mara snagged a nomination for her transformative portrayal of punk-rock computer hacker Lisbeth Salander, but beyond that and recognition for Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross' score, "Dragon Tattoo" got left on the bench. After David Fincher and "Social Network" got burned toward the end of last year's awards season, we really thought he'd at least score Director and Best Picture Drama nods this year. No such luck. Looking at the film on its own merits, "Dragon Tattoo" is just fantastic filmmaking. The Movies team is obsessed with the crime thriller, as you'll hear in the coming days and weeks. Its lack of recognition at the Globes is more than deserving of some Salander-style revenge.

Shock: Extremely Quiet And Incredibly Far
"Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close" got nothing, nada, zip. We won't call that a snub — it wasn't our favorite movie of the year — but the fact that it got literally zero nominations is definitely a shock. Don't count it out of the Oscar race just yet, though: An adapted screenplay nom is almost certainly in its future.

Snub: No Nolte
Not only was "Warrior" actor Nick Nolte expected to get nominated for Best Supporting Actor, many expected him to win. Surprise: He's not going to win, because he's not nominated! Nolte's nowhere to be found this year, despite his recent SAG nomination. In fact, "Warrior" got absolutely nothing at the Globes. Nolte was really that movie's best chance, frankly, so we're starting to wonder about its awards season prospects.

Shock: Michael Fassbender has "Shame"
The Irish-German actor's Best Actor nomination was one of the biggest surprises of all. (Sorry, we couldn't resist.) Fassbender's fearless performance definitely deserved recognition, but we're very surprised — and very heartened — to see "Shame" overcome the NC-17 stigma. Odds of a win aren't in his favor, but Fassbender's nomination is much deserved after the actor's absolutely amazing year.

Snub: Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Snub
Perhaps Gary Oldman's road to Oscar just isn't meant to be. The "Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy" got overlooked by Globes against all odds. It really is close to impossible to believe that Oldman has never been nominated for an Academy Award, and we thought "Tinker" would finally be his chance at not just a nom, but a win. But now that he's been shut out by the Globes, does he really have any shot at all on Oscar night? We're still hopeful, but not optimistic.

Shock: "American" Success Story
Before we go, a quick look at TV land. Ryan Murphy's "American Horror Story" got nominated for Best Television Series (Drama), a move that's sure to surprise a lot of people (even if that Jessica Lange nomination surprises precisely no one — she was one of our Top 10 TV Characters of 2011, after all). "AHS" is one of the most thoroughly disgusting, unsettling shows on the small screen, now or ever: How many other programs this year showcased a school shooting in such gory detail, or stitched deceased fetuses together to create one terrible Franken-baby? That said, "Horror Story" also features one of the greatest casts on all of television, and it pushes its plot forward with a ferocity matched by few other series. Like all things on the FX thriller, the "Horror" nomination is a shock, but a welcome one.

Snub: "Breaking" Bust
No one's going to argue that Bryan Cranston deserves that Best Performance nomination, but seriously, there's not a single other "Breaking Bad" nom? That's just flat-out ridiculous! "Breaking Bad" just came off its greatest season ever. Cranston nailed it as Walter White, but fellow actors Aaron Paul as reluctant assassin Jesse Pinkman and Giancarlo Esposito as meth kingpin Gustavo Fring also turned in marvelous performances worthy of not just nominations, but full-on awards. (While we're at it, here's my super-quick opportunity to say that "Sons of Anarchy" should have gotten some love as well. Like "Bad," this season of "SOA" was not just its greatest one yet, but perhaps the greatest season of television all year.) Acting aside, "Breaking Bad" deserved a Best Television Series spot much more than newbie "Boss" or even "Horror Story," much as we're happy to see it on the list. Needless to say, we're not happy about the oversight. Besides, Hollywood Foreign Press Association, didn't you hear? Walter White is the danger!

Katy Perry Calls MTV Artist Of The Year Title 'Validating'

'To be Artist of the Year, a whole 365 days, that's pretty cool,' she says in a video acceptance speech.
By Jocelyn Vena

Katy Perry was everywhere in 2011, and thanks to that pop-culture takeover, she was named MTV's Artist of the Year.

The honor is the culmination of an insanely busy year for Perry, but she still found a few minutes to send a big "thank you" to everyone for her incredible success over the past 12 months. "Hi everyone at MTV! I just want to say thank you for this amazing award," she said in a video message. "To be Artist of the Year, a whole 365 days, that's pretty cool."

Perry beat out fellow superstars Nicki Minaj, Lady Gaga, Justin Bieber, Rihanna and Lil Wayne during our Best Artists of 2011 debate, which makes the win that much more unbelievable for the pink-haired singer.

"I wasn't really allowed to watch MTV growing up, so this feels really validating," she said. "And I've had a fantastic year, a great tour and a great run, and you guys have been so a part of it and such a big reason why. So thank you so much. I really appreciate it."

Perry was all over the radio in 2011, thanks to hit singles like "E.T.," "The One That Got Away" and "Last Friday Night (T.G.I.F.)." She appeared on the big screen in "The Smurfs" and the small screen hosting "Saturday Night Live." She hit the road for her California Dreams Tour, kept us captivated with videos like the VMA-winning "Firework" and "E.T." and always had us talking, whether it was about what she was wearing, tweeting or saying. And, oh yeah, "Firework," also happens to be MTV's #10 Song of the Year.

As 2011 comes to an end, Perry will kick off the new year with Grammy nominations for Record of the Year and Best Pop Solo Performance for "Firework."

Stick with MTV as we count down the Best of 2011, including the top Artists, Songs, Live Performances and EDM Artists of the year.

How Did Rihanna Sneak By Beyonce On Best Artists Of 2011?

It was close, but Rih's ability to remain in the pop-culture consciousness all year places her just above the Queen B.
By Jason Kaufman

Rihanna
Photo: Getty Images

It was a showdown between two queens of pop — Rihanna and Beyoncé — each vying for a prime spot on MTV's Best Artists of 2011 list. RiRi wound up besting Lady B by a slim margin. But how did she come out on top?

MTV correspondent Sway Calloway moderated a spirited roundtable discussion with some of our very own experts: James Montgomery and Rob Markman (MTV News), Yomi Desalu and Malika Quemerais (MTV Music and Talent) and Tamar Anitai and Nicole James (MTV.com). The panel discussed the artists who ruled 2011, from the Throne and Lil Wayne to Justin Bieber and Lady Gaga. It was during that debate that Beyoncé and Rihanna met in a battle for the #6 position. In the end, Rihanna prevailed, with B taking #7.

"I love Rihanna," Montgomery said. "I think she is the kind of artist that I really like as a pop star who makes really cool, controversial videos and pushes the envelope in every conceivable way."

"She hustled so hard," Anitai pished.

After all, Rih did have us buzzing about songs off two albums in 2011. New hits popping from 2010's Loud — including a remix of "S&M" with the one-and-only Britney Spears — ruled the charts in the first half of '11. While some artists would just ride the momentum of that smash album, Rih went back into the studio mid-tour and cranked out Talk That Talk. The first single off TTT, "We Found Love," was a certified dance-pop classic from the minute it hit.

It was a tough decision for our experts because Knowles had such a remarkable year. Her album 4 — a collection of soulful ballads and mid-tempo tracks tempered with a deep nostalgic streak — was arguably her most mature yet. And she triumphed during intimate, sold-out shows at New York City's Roseland Ballroom in August. B was also responsible for this year's most talked-about (and tweeted about) pop-culture moment, announcing her pregnancy to the world right on our VMA stage.

But it was Rihanna's ability to rule for 365 days straight that was the deciding factor.

"It's very rare that you see an artist that's there, that is consistently there throughout the year that people don't get sick of," Quemerais observed. "I feel like the appetite for Rihanna is constant."

"If you were to go numbers by numbers, Rihanna can go toe-to-toe with anyone on our list," Montgomery reinforced. "She never gets the credit that she deserves."

She certainly got the credit here.

Paris Jackson Talks About Her Dad On 'Ellen'

Paris reveals best advice Michael gave her.
By Gil Kaufman

Paris Jackson appears on Ellen
Photo: Warner Bros

Paris Jackson will give her first-ever solo interview on Thursday morning when she appears on "The Ellen DeGeneres Show" to promote her upcoming acting debut. After a cloistered childhood, Paris, 13, the only daughter of late pop icon Michael Jackson, opened up to Ellen about her formerly sheltered life and how her dad's music inspire her acting.

In excerpts released before the airing, Paris explained that her dad helped her prepare for her upcoming first movie role, in which she'll play Lundon in "Lundon's Bridge and the Three Keys," an adaptation of the fantasy series based on writer Dennis Christen's novels.

"When I was really little my dad was in the movie 'Moonwalker' and I knew he could sing really well but I didn't know he could act," she said. "I saw that and I said, 'Wow, I want to be just like him.' " She said Michael also gave her at-home acting lessons. "We would do improv together. He would give us little scenarios. He would (say), 'OK, in this scene you're going to cry' and I'd cry on the spot."

In one of the most (literally) revealing moments, Paris explained what it felt like for herself and her siblings, Prince and Blanket, to wear disguises for most of their young lives. "I'm like, 'This is stupid why am I wearing a mask?' But I kind of realized the older I got like he only tried to protect us and he'd explain that to us too," she said. The masks, in fact, helped the three kids live as normal a life as they possibly could considering that their dad was one of the most sought-after paparazzi targets on earth. "I do have like a regular childhood," she said. "I mean, I'm treated the same. When I came to [my new school] they didn't know who I was. I was like, 'Yes, I have a chance to be normal.'"

When asked if she realized how big a deal her dad was when she was a child, Paris admitted, "I just thought, 'he's got a few songs out,' but I figured everyone did that."

In the action-animation hybrid "Lundon," Paris will voice the lead character, a human, in a fantasy adventure in which "sea magic turns a dolphin into a human, a teenage boy into a dragonfly and a loving jellyfish queen into an evil fairy godmother." Among the other voices in the movie are former CNN personality Larry King and his wife, Shawn, and ex 'NSYNC member Joey Fatone.

Paris told DeGeneres that her dad warned her before his surprise death in June 2009 that he would not be around forever. "He said, 'If I die tomorrow always remember what I told you.' I took his advice and I remembered everything he told me," she said.

During our Britney Spears Tournament: 30 Videos for 30 Years, we've been asking celebrities to tell us what their personal favorite Britney Spears videos are.

" 'Toxic'!" Gabe Saporta and Victoria Asher of Cobra Starship shouted in unison.

"I don't know if it's that the song was so amazing or what," Gabe said. " 'Womanizer' is amazing!" he added about director Joseph Khan's follow-up video, which features a similar series of Britney alter egos as a theme.

"I'm going to go with the 'Slave' joint," Nick Cannon said with certainty. "That track was crazy. It was probably my favorite Britney record but then the video ... It was all hot and they were sweating. Britney did that!"

"Is it '... Baby One More Time' when she was in the schoolgirl outfit?" "Jersey Shore" star Ronnie asked. "Yeah, that's it."

Head over to Britney30.MTV.com and vote for your favorite music video in MTV News' Britney Spears Tournament: 30 Videos for 30 Years.

When asked what he liked most about it, he laughed and said, "Her in the schoolgirl outfit!"

"The one when she's in the little schoolgirl clothes," agreed Joe Manganiello, who plays the big and burly werewolf Alcide Herveaux in HBO's "True Blood." "That's a good one."

Emily VanCamp from ABC's "Revenge" agreed with Ronnie and Joe. "That was the thing, you know?"

Comedian and talk-show host Jimmy Fallon also went with "... Baby One More Time," saying, "That one's just a classic!"

Unfortunately, "... Baby One More Time" fell out of the competition in the second round of voting to the newer video "Criminal," off of Spears' latest album, Femme Fatale.

Michael Buble Holds On To 1 Billboard Slot

Black Keys' El Camino comes in at #2.

It's the most wonderful time of the year for throwback crooner Michael Bublé. His holiday album, Christmas, will easily hold on to the #1 slot on the Billboard 200 thanks to sales of just under 480,000, lifting his seven-week total to more than 1.5 million, according to figures provided by Nielsen SoundScan.

And though they notched their highest chart debut ever and best first-week sales to date, modern blues duo the Black Keys had to settle for #2 and sales of 206,000 for El Camino. Late British R&B singer Amy Winehouse was back in the top 10 thanks to her first posthumous collection, Lioness: Hidden Treasures, which hit #5 on sales of 114,000.

Other top 10 debuts include the latest "Glee" cast album (#9, 58,000) and nü-metal veterans Korn's dip into the dubstep sound, Path of Totality (#10, 55,000). The rest of the top 10: Adele, 21 (#3, 187,000), Justin Bieber, Under the Mistletoe (#4, 158,000), Andrea Bocelli, Concerto: One Night in Central Park (#6, 79,000), Drake, Take Care (#7, 73,000) and Nickelback's Here and Now (#8, 66,000).

Further down the line, the Roots entered the charts at #17 with Undun (48,000), rockers Chevelle were at #20 with Hats Off to the Bull (43,000), smooth loverman Robin Thicke slid in at #22 with Love After War (41,000) and T-Pain's comeback disc, Revolver, had a modest debut at #28 (34,000).

As fans of the crime trilogy get ready to check out the David Fincher-directed take on "Girl With the Dragon Tattoo," the Trent Reznor-created soundtrack for the film quietly slid onto the charts at #103 on sales of just under 11,000.

The top of the charts should remain pretty static next week as the only new titles hitting the top 200 are from R&B veteran Anthony Hamilton, a joint album by Snoop Dogg and Wiz Khalifa and recently sprung rapper Gucci Mane's collaborative album with White Girl Mob rapper V-Nasty, Baytl.

'Dragon Tattoo' Reviews: How Did Rooney Mara Do?

Moviegoers won't be able to take their eyes off the American actress' Lisbeth Salander, critics rave.
By Eric Ditzian

Rooney Mara owns "The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo."

That is to say, while the film shows off David Fincher at his meticulous, moody best and Daniel Craig delivers yet another stellar performance, the beating heart of the picture — or, if you will, the exposed pierced nipple — is Mara as the spiky-haired hacker, Lisbeth Salander.

For all the shortcomings of "Dragon Tattoo"— and there are a bunch, from a pacing that sometimes drags to Swedish author Stieg Larsson's deeply unsatisfying ending — you walk away unable to shake what you've just seen from Mara. Alternately vulnerable and vicious, her Salander is an entirely different creature from the one presented by Noomi Rapace in the Swedish version of the film and, what's more, an entirely different creature from anything Mara offered in "The Social Network" and "A Nightmare on Elm Street."

Let's stop right there, before we go from gushing to outright hero worship. At least we're not alone. With the "Dragon Tattoo" review embargo officially lifted, critics have been celebrating Mara's performance.

The Transformation
"Rooney Mara's blazing, uncompromising performance is the film's center, practically its reason to exist. ... Eyebrows bleached blond, hair jet black and scowling constantly, Salander has deliberately modeled herself as the opposite of the feminine ideal, and though Mara digs into her humanity and even sensuality, she never lets down Salander's guard for the sake of the audience sympathy." — Katey Rich, Cinema Blend

The Chemistry
"Mara and Craig make an indomitable screen pair, he nominally leading their intense search into decades-old serial killings, she surging ahead, plowing through obstacles with flashes of phenomenal intellect and eruptions of physical fury." — David Germain, The Associated Press

The Sex Scenes
"[It's] Mara's movie for the taking, and she snatches it up in dramatic fashion. ... Fincher's belief in her is borne out in a dominating performance of submerged rage, confidence and defiance. Baring all in the several sex scenes, both coerced and consensual, she goes all the way in a performance that compares favorably to that of Noomi Rapace in the Swedish version and its two sequels. She comes across here as the real deal." — Todd McCarthy, The Hollywood Reporter

The Awards
"Mara, I feel, gives Salander a sadder and more vulnerable aura and a more emotionally readable quality than what Noomi Rapace delivered in the Swedish trilogy. You might compare the two films down the road and say, 'Nope, don't see it...six of one, half-dozen of the other' but I know what I felt from Mara's eyes, and there's a lot going on inside her, I swear. Tremors and feints and glances and looks that say 'stay away, I don't want you near....wait, maybe I do.' There's enough in this performance, I feel, for Mara to be counted among the year's Best Actress nominees." — Jeffrey Wells, Hollywood Elsewhere

The Final Word
"You can't take your eyes off Rooney Mara as the notorious Lisbeth Salander." — David Denby, The New Yorker

Lady Gaga's Born This Way Tour Will Be 'Exaggerated'

Producer Fernando Garibay tells fans to 'use your imagination' for Mother Monster's upcoming tour.

When Lady Gaga released Born This Way earlier this year, she had just wrapped up the Monster Ball Tour. Now, with 2011 coming to an end, it's only a matter of time before she launches her next stage spectacle. So what should fans expect? Anything and everything.

"This album was the most personal [because of] the amount of detail that went into this record, the amount of passion [and] emotion from her and the team," Fernando Garibay, Gaga's producer, told MTV News last week. "Every song was a story towards the Born This Way theme. We're excited now, putting that into the tour and expressing that on a live performance level.

"You can imagine what happened on the Monster Ball, so use your imagination," he said. "That's what's going to happen, exaggerated."

For now, Gaga is playing radio shows — smaller shows like KIIS-FM's Jingle Ball in Los Angeles, which she headlined last weekend.

"I would love to go out there and do my entire new album, but everyone out there wants to hear the songs that [radio] has made hits for me over the years," she told us backstage at Jingle Ball. "So I wanted to honor the radio station as well as the fans tonight and give them a little bit of my new record, but also all the songs from the past three years."

She explained to MTV News that these mini-gigs are a good tease of what fans will see on the Born This Way trek. Gaga's recent performances have been pop shows full of spectacle, including bouncy, hospital-themed dance numbers (an homage to the "Marry the Night" video) and dedications to metal culture with gang-inspired fashion that certainly reflects the looks she wore on parts of the Monster Ball Tour. But they are on such a smaller scale that Gaga admitted she couldn't do everything she wanted to do.

"I couldn't fit my Olympic-size moon onto [the] stage," she laughed. "It's going to have the feeling of it in some ways. It's hard to explain. It's very different aesthetics. But the vision of the show tonight is sort of a continuation of this junkyard motorcycle gang mixed with a dark Christmas. I'm excited; we worked really hard on it."

In addition to beginning to conceive the Born This Way Tour, Gaga just dropped her "Marry The Night" video, is up for three Grammys and is beginning to work on her next album.

And then there were two! Fans have been voting in MTV News' Britney Spears Tournament: 30 Videos for 30 Years, and the 30 contenders have been narrowed down to the final two: "I'm a Slave 4 U," and "Criminal."

Voting in round four kicked off on Wednesday and by Thursday morning (December 1) "I'm a Slave 4 U" music video had breezed past Britney's Femme Fatale hit "Hold It Against Me" with 67 percent of the vote.

"Criminal," which features Britney's real-life boyfriend Jason Trawick had a tougher time, squeezing past younger Britney's big hit "Lucky" with a lead of only 53 percent in the final-four round.

Now, "Slave" and "Criminal" are battling it out for the title of best Britney Video of All Time; hundreds of thousands of votes were cast as the two clips made it through four competitive rounds.

Head over to Britney30.MTV.com and vote for your favorite music video in MTV News' Britney Spears Tournament: 30 Videos for 30 Years.

Britney super fan and founder of BreatheHeavy.com, Jordan Miller, weighed in on why "Criminal" has made it this far, defeating the likes of "... Baby One More Time," "Stronger" and "I Wanna Go" in the process.

"I think 'Criminal' 's made it really far because it's her latest music video that's out," Miller told MTV News. "I think if that music video came out years ago, I don't think it would be doing so well. It's being promoted right now on TV and radio, but I think because it's new to fans, it's made it this far."

The final round of voting closes at 7 a.m. on Friday. Vote for your favorite video as many times as you would like; the winner will be announced tomorrow morning, which also happens to be Britney's 30th birthday!

Which Britney video is going to win it all? Let us know in the comments section below!

Daniel Radcliffe Is Entertainment Weekly's Entertainer Of The Year

'Harry Potter' star joined by Adele, 'Bridesmaids' cast and more in annual issue.
By Jocelyn Vena

As 2011 nears its end, more Best of 2011 lists are rolling out. On Wednesday (December 7), Entertainment Weekly revealed their Entertainer of the Year: "Harry Potter" star Daniel Radcliffe.

This year's cover boy, who will next star in the 2012 thriller "The Woman in Black," wrapped up the beloved and successful "Harry Potter" franchise before becoming the toast of Broadway in "How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying." Proving himself a worthy candidate for the prize, Radcliffe just made Forbes' list of bankable box-office stars.

Radcliffe is joined by Adele, the cast of "Bridesmaids," Hugh Jackman, "South Park" creators Matt Stone and Trey Parker, Viola Davis and "Game of Thrones" author George R.R. Martin in EW's annual issue, which hits newsstands December 9.

Radcliffe — who was also chosen as the actor MTV News was most thankful for in 2011 — opened up to us earlier this fall about his ever-evolving career.

"It's been a great first year away from 'Potter,' " he said. "It's been very successful. I've done some work I'm really proud of in that time, particularly onstage in 'How to Succeed.' Just the process of doing it and doing it and doing it, I've got so much better, I think, during the run, as is the way it should be. It's been a great year, but I think next year is the big one for me. 'The Woman in Black' is coming out, and I've also got a couple other things I'll be doing. The next two or three years are going to be pretty important, I think, and if [2011] is not a breakout year, it's a breakaway year."

In the issue, the Entertainment Weekly honorees are toasted by some of Hollywood's biggest stars, including Julia Roberts, Amy Poehler, Meryl Streep and Sandra Bullock. "I went and saw 'The Book of Mormon' on Broadway, and was so offended I peed my pants twice," Bullock writes about Stone and Parker in the issue. "Maybe three times. I lost count I was so offended."

Poehler offers up her take on "Game of Thrones" author Martin: "[He] is such a great writer that it makes people angry. Tyrion the Imp has some of the best one-liners I have ever read from someone about to die. Did I mention a lot of people die?"

Taylor Swift was the mag's 2010 Entertainer of the Year.

Beyonce Slinks Around In 'Dance For You' Teases

Full-length video will be featured on deluxe edition of B's 'Live at Roseland' DVD.
By Jocelyn Vena

Beyoncé just wants to "Dance for You" in new teases for her 4 album track. The sexy video will be featured in the deluxe edition of Queen B's "Live at Roseland" DVD special, out November 29.

In two clips posted on Aceshowbiz.com, Beyoncé dons hot pants, garters and a slinky wrap dress as she performs a sexy dance routine on a desk. The video has a film noir vibe, as a private eye-type character watches Beyoncé as she dances. In the other tease, Beyoncé, in the same outfit, dances seductively in front of a chair as the camera cuts to the detective fellow watching her.

"Dance for You" is one of three tracks featured as bonus material on the deluxe version of 4, along with "Lay Up Under Me" and "Schoolin' Life." The track was produced by The-Dream and features writing credits from Tricky Stewart as well as Beyoncé. It's a sexy R&B jam about keeping things hot with her man. On it, she sings, "Tonight I'm gonna dance for you/ Tonight I'm gonna dance for you/ Tonight I'm gonna put my body on your body/ Boy, I like it when you watch me/ Tonight it's going down."

"Live at Roseland" was filmed in August over four shows performed at the Roseland Ballroom in New York City. It features Beyoncé recounting anecdotes about her career while she performs some of her older tracks, before launching into a nonstop performance of 4 played straight through.

The standard edition of "Live at Roseland" hit shelves this week, along with concert specials from Britney Spears, Lady Gaga and Taylor Swift. Adele also drops her "Live at Royal Albert Hall" DVD on November 29.

Britney Spears' 'Slave 4 U': The Story Behind The Video

'Slave' is facing off against 'Criminal' in the finals of MTV News' Britney Spears tournament — vote now!
By Jocelyn Vena

The competition was stiff in MTV News' Britney Spears Tournament: 30 Videos for 30 Years, but we're finally at the homestretch.

After narrowing 30 videos down to the final two — Brit's sweaty, old-school clip for "I'm a Slave 4 U" and her newer, equally sexy one for "Criminal" — it's all up to fans to decide which video will reign supreme on Friday (December 2), Britney's 30th birthday.

But before you cast your vote, let's take a deeper dive into the Francis Lawrence-directed video for "Slave."

Up until the raw clip, Britney's sex-kitten antics had been reserved for the PG set, but with "Slave 4 U," the singer launched herself into full-on sex-siren status. Appearing in the video drenched in sweat, it was the most provocative look (including her thong over her jeans!) that the then 19-year-old vixen had ever given her audience.

Spears told MTV during a taping of "Making The Video" that the theme of the song and the video, which put Spears right in the middle of a sexy dance party (with an appearance by celeb DJ du jour DJ Skribble), really matched who she was at the time.

"We're in Los Angeles shooting my first single off my new album," she said of the clip, shot over Labor Day weekend in 2001. "It's basically saying 'I'm a slave for the music.' Like, when you go into a club, you can't help yourself; you're enraptured in it. When I go to a club, I can't just sit there and chit-chat. I'd much rather be on the dance floor, just dancing. And that's what the song's talking about."

Lawrence, who would later go on to direct Spears in 2008's "Circus" as well, wanted the video to move far beyond the sleek dance clubs of L.A. or New York. He wanted it to go global. "I came up with this concept of having this club be in this abandoned Asian bath house and having it be filled with young world travelers, the kind of people who would go to these far exotic places to go to a place like this."

Head over to Britney30.MTV.com and vote for your favorite music video in MTV News' Britney Spears Tournament: 30 Videos for 30 Years.

Many of Spears' clips up until "Slave" had been very high-concept. This one, however, focused on Spears and her dance moves. "Really, the concept of the video, it's not this deep, drawn-out concept story line," she said. "It's just me going to a really cool club, the kind of club that you watch on TV and [you go], 'I wish I was there.' "

Lawrence added, "Everything we do incorporates a lot of dance, every little vignette [is] all really done through dance."

The video, which debuted in September of that year, follows Spears as she makes her way through the club, dancing and sweating the night away. As the party progresses, anything and everything that can hydrate the revelers has completely disappeared. So Spears and her pals take the party elsewhere.

"I walk in, and everyone's just hanging out. Everyone's in their own world," she said. "And it ends up being really, really late and the sun comes up, and we're all out of drinks, and we get really thirsty and it's raining, and we drink the water."

Do you think "Slave" or "Criminal" should come out on top? Let us know in the comments!

'New Year's Eve': The Reviews Are In!

Critics complain of the movie's crowded cast and 'half-dozen trivial subplots.'
By Kevin P. Sullivan

Lea Michele in "New Year's Eve"
Photo: Warner Bros. Pictures

How many stars does it take to make a successful romantic comedy? Whatever the right answer may be, the reviews for "New Year's Eve" indicate that two dozen is probably too many.

The follow-up to last year's successful "Valentine's Day," the star-packed rom-com modeled on "Love Actually," has earned some of the worst reviews of the year, with critics complaining of over-jammed story lines and convenient storytelling.

Check out our roundup of the reviews to help you decide whether to check out "New Year's Eve" this weekend.

The Story
"Elsewhere in the great big city, a wondrous toy, just made for a girl and boy: Ashton Kutcher and Lea Michele are stuck in an elevator together. Robert De Niro lies dying in a hospital, hoping to see the ball drop from the rooftop one last time. Halle Berry is his nurse. Michelle Pfeiffer is the mousy record company executive who cuts loose with the help of hopped-up delivery boy-man Zac Efron. Katherine Heigl (playing a Type-A control freak, for a change) and Jon Bon 'Blasé Beyond Previously Known Human Limits' Jovi discuss past heartache and future prospects at the swank New Year's Eve party hosted by Cherry Jones, whose son, Josh Duhamel, is stuck in Connecticut and trying to get back. Sarah Jessica Parker is the mother of Abigail Breslin, the latter desperate to get off on her own with her pals." — Michael Phillips, The Chicago Tribune

The Cast
"The casting is the least of this movie's problems, but the most bizarre. Michelle Pfeiffer plays a lonely old biddy — what are they trying to do to her? — and Sarah Jessica Parker (born 1965) and Zac Efron (born 1987) are brother and sister. (Oh, their poor mother.) Josh Duhamel, who looks as if he's 30, goes through the movie talking about a planned midnight rendezvous with the woman of his dreams. Then the woman shows up, looking not quite old enough to be his mother, but like a half sister from a previous marriage. It's as if the roles were handed out by lottery." — Mick LaSalle, San Francisco Chronicle

Hilary Swank
"How is it possible to assemble more than two dozen stars in a movie and find nothing interesting for any of them to do? What sins did poor Hilary Swank commit, that after winning two Oscars, she has to play the role of the woman in charge of the New Year's Eve ball in Times Square? And if you don't think there's dialogue about getting her ball to drop, you're barking up the wrong movie." — Roger Ebert, Chicago Sun-Times

The Directing and Screenplay
" 'New Year's Eve' was directed by Garry Marshall (best known for 'Pretty Woman') from a screenplay by Katherine Fugate. Last year the same team gave us the similarly unendurable 'Valentine's Day.' Like its forerunner, 'New Year's Eve' interweaves more than a half-dozen trivial subplots into a cheerlessly cheery mosaic. The screenplay isn't written so much as assembled in carefully slotted little blocks, following the rules of a screenwriting textbook." — Stephen Holden, The New York Times

Final Word
"Why bother with a new title? 'New Year's Eve' is simply 2010's 'Valentine's Day' all over again, and it's about as appealing as a flute of cheap Champagne left over from the last holiday. Sitting through 'New Year's Eve' is like attending a crowded party filled with pretty people who have nothing to say." — Claudia Puig, USA Today
