Rihanna Even 'Better At Acting,' 'Battleship' Co-Star Says

Taylor Kitsch also opens up to MTV News about filming his sexiest scene so far in 'Savages.'

No one can ever accuse Taylor Kitsch of slacking off. In addition to heading up the massive release of "John Carter" this week, Kitsch has two more movies headed for theaters before the summer is out.

In his second big-budget action movie of the year, Kitsch will try to sink some alien scum in Peter Berg's "Battleship," based on the classic board game. Always a fan of ironic understatement, Kitsch told Josh Horowitz during MTV First, "Yeah, it was fun."

Through "Battleship," Kitsch not only reunited with Berg, who gave him his breakout role as Tim Riggins in "Friday Night Lights," but he also worked closely with acting legend Liam Neeson. "Liam Neeson is kind of decent. I had to carry Liam on my back," Kitsch joked. "Let's just get that out there." Knowing better, he added, "He's going to eat me for breakfast."

Taking a more serious approach to talking about the movie, Kitsch said he was honored to work with both Neeson and Berg. "[Neeson] is amazing, and so is Pete. It was very flattering for him to come and pitch and talk about 'Battleship' and to regroup with him," Kitsch said. "As you guys know, he was the catalyst in hiring Tim Riggins. I love the guy. He's a dear friend. Again, it is so hard to say 'no' to that guy. This movie will surprise a lot of people."

"Battleship" also marks the big-screen debut for Rihanna, and when forced to say whether her acting talent surpasses his singing skills, Kitsch took a very political approach. "Oh, man. This is a tough one," he said. "This is intense. She's better at acting."

Large action flicks aren't the only tricks Kitsch has up his sleeve this summer. He'll also star in a film from iconic director Oliver Stone called "Savages."

In "Savages," Kitsch plays a pot grower who gets mixed up with the wrong people. The movie should have some of the raciest material Kitsch has had to work with. "There's some sex in there. The opening scene of Chon, pretty intense," he said. "Chon's the guy I play in it. That opening scene, if [Stone] keeps it that way ..."

"Blake Lively plays O, and Aaron Johnson plays Ben, so it's basically these two guys that are in love with this one girl in their own way and will truly do anything for her and to get her back," Kitsch said of the story. "She gets kidnapped quite early in the film, so it's that journey of getting O back. And it's those crossroads that are inevitably met with Benicio del Toro, John Travolta, Uma Thurman, Salma Hayek. Again, on the back.," he joked.

Check out everything we've got on "John Carter" and "Battleship."

Grammys Behind The Scenes: What You Didn't See

MTV News had a prime spot on the red carpet and inside Staples Center — here's what you missed if you were watching on TV.
By MTV News staff

<P>MTV News spent hours interviewing artists and stars on the <a href="http://www.mtv.com/photos/?fid=1679060">Grammy red carpet</a>. LaLa Anthony COVERS "LATINA" Magazine, Says She TRUSTS Carmelo And Gives Him Space

In a spring ready colorful spread, LaLa Anthony covers the April 2012 issue of "LATINA" Magazine where she dishes on keeping her marriage fresh and the trust she and husband Carmelo Anthony share.  She also offers helpful advice on building confidence and self-esteem.  See the highlights inside...

In the latest issue of "LATINA" Magazine, LaLa Anthony talks about her new makeup line, her reality show, being a mother to 5-year-old Kiyan and loving her NBA baller husband Carmelo Anthony.   even offers advice to the next generation about self-esteem and fighting insecurity.  Here are the highlights:

On how she and Carmelo have lasted 8 years

“It’s been 15 days since I’ve seen my husband. That’s a long time for us to go without seeing each other. But I went on this whirlwind of launching the makeup line and my husband’s a basketball player. It’s not like he can say, ‘Hey, I’m not playing in the game today, I’m going to meet up with my wife somewhere.’ We’ve been together for eight years and I think we’ve lasted this long because we give each other space.  But there’s also that time where it can be too much space.”

On being successful and having it all

“I’m never satisfied—career-wise, I mean—I’m always looking for the next thing; that’s just my personality,” she says. “Why can’t I be a great mom, wife, TV host, actress, producer, have my own reality show and makeup line? The hard part is the balancing of it all.”

On trusting her husband Carmelo

“I wouldn’t say it’s a misconception, because there are a lot of athletes who do live a certain life with women everywhere,” La La says. “So you can’t act like it’s the craziest thing you’ve ever heard, because it is out there. But I’m secure in my relationship. I’m happy with having my own thing going on. I don’t spend all day worrying about what he’s doing. In that sense, I trust him.”

On staying confident

Tap into your uniquenessss - “I encourage people to embrace whatever it is that makes them different. Not being like everybody, setting your own trends, being your own person, that’s what
makes you cool.”

On making peace with your insecurities

“In this day and age, [people will] tear you to hell: ‘Her hair, her legs, her this, her that.’ So it is sometimes hard to stay as confident as you like. I’m just like anybody else. Weight goes up and down, sometimes I’m killing myself to be on a crazy diet, sometimes I’m not. Sometimes I feel like my legs are too skinny, other times I don’t. As you get more mature you learn to embrace insecurities and figure out how to be okay with that stuff, to keep it in perspective.”

On building a great support system

“My family always encouraged me and supported me. While still a teenager, I told my mom one day I was moving to L.A.  She was like, ‘All right, I’ll go with you, get you settled and come back.’ If I didn’t have that I wouldn’t be confident to do all these things.”

In this photo, LaLa wears Blazer, Material Girl. Pants, Rachel Roy. Necklace, Mordekai by Ken Borochov. Pumps, Ruthie Davis. Ring, Kenneth Jay Lane.

In this photo, Jacket and shorts, Nanette Lepore. Top, H&M. Earrings, Spring Street Design. Ring, Kenneth Jay Lane.

Kyra Sedgwick: "My Kids Light Up My Life"

Even after more than 20 years of marriage, actress Kyra Sedgwick says her "heart gets a little fluttery" when she sees her husband Kevin Bacon. Parents to kids Travis, 22, and Sosie, 18, the couple have one of Hollywood's longest - and seemingly happiest - relationships. Covering the March issue of Redbook, the 46-year-old star of The Closer explains how they manage to make it work.

On balancing being a partner and being a parent: "I feel the primary relationship has to be the mother and the father, and then it can be the kids. Of course the kids come first in planning your life, but it's incredibly important to keep your relationship as a couple strong and make time for it. It's the foundation on which everything is built. Kids should know that your needs are important, because if they think your happiness lies only in them, that's a lot of pressure on them. Plus, I think if you are pursuing your own goals, it makes your kids want to search for whatever their dreams and bliss are."

Jonas Brothers Promise 'Anything Goes' On New Album

'We're saying, 'Let's just vibe out, write a million songs and see what we're feeling most,' Nick Jonas tells MTV News.
By Jocelyn Vena

It's on! The Jonas Brothers promised they'd be hitting the studio very soon, and it seems they are men of their word. This week big bro Kevin tweeted out some footage of Joe and Nick in the studio whipping up some musical ear candy that will surely delight their fans.

While there's no certainty that the teased track will make their next studio release, the song certainly does blend the guys' love for mixing genres, touching on soul, rock and disco.

When Nick dropped by the MTV News offices recently, he said that when this next album drops, all bets are off as to what it will sound like.

"We have spoken about it, and the thing we're doing which is different to any record we've made in the past is we're saying, 'Anything goes, let's just vibe out, listen to a million songs, write a million songs and see what we're feeling most.' Our statement, as a band, for this record has to be really strong. We feel like we want to deliver the best record we can."

Individually, the guys have been busy churning out albums, but there hasn't been a proper JB album since 2009, when they dropped Lines, Vines and Trying Times. The guys are well aware that the music scene is vastly different three years later.

"We pay attention to it, definitely," Nick said. "That's part of your job as an artist, too, is to be aware of what other people are doing. ... We pay attention and have been paying attention just to see where we want to fall. But first we just want to write great songs, and as far as how it sounds, that'll come second."

There has yet to be a release date for the album, but the Jonas Brothers have teased that it may drop before the end of the year. The hashtag #JonasBrothers2012 attached to the studio video may be the best hint so far.

"We don't know how long it's going to take us to write this record," Nick warned. "It may take a couple weeks, it may take months, it could take years, but we're ready to go on that journey. It's been a while and there has been a lot of growth as individuals and musically as well. We've all gone on our journeys musically. It'll be interesting to see what comes of that."

What are you hoping to see on the Jonas Brothers' next album? Leave your comment below!

The affair will be captured for a future episode of "Oprah's Next Chapter" on her OWN network. "My mother and I have initiated a passion project. We call it the <a href="/news/articles/1673633/lady-gaga-born-this-way-foundation.jhtml">Born This Way Foundation</a>," Gaga said in a statement last November about the foundation, which takes its name from her hit single and album. "Together we hope to establish a standard of Bravery and Kindness, as well as a community worldwide that protects and nurtures others in the face of bullying and abandonment." The foundation will work with a number of partners, including the John D. &amp; Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation, the California Endowment and the Berkman Center for Internet &amp; Society at Harvard University. According to the statement, the foundation will focus on "youth empowerment and equality by addressing issues like self-confidence, well-being, anti-bullying, mentoring and career development and will utilize digital mobilization as one of the means to create positive change." "My daughter's foundation was born out of her passion to create a better world where people are kinder and nicer to one another and are accepted for who they are, regardless of how different they may be," Mama Germanotta said. "She has experienced many of the struggles that our youth encounter today, and identifies with the lasting effects they can have without proper support. Together, we look forward to creating a new movement that will engage and empower youth and accept them as valuable members of our society."</p>

Demi Lovato certainly inspires her fans to be who they are and make no apologies for it. During her MTV special, "Demi Lovato: Stay Strong," airing at 10 p.m. ET/PT today (March 6) on MTV, the singer/actress opens up about her connection to her Lovatics, and how they inspire her as much as she inspires them.

"Every time someone asks me for a picture or an autograph, even if I'm having a bad day and I'm in a bad mood, I remember, 'You're nothing without this person,' " she says during the documentary. "They make it special."

At a tour stop, one fan tells Lovato that she inspired her to not wear her wig and just embrace who she is. The young woman tells the singer, "Keep being awesome."

Later during her performance, Lovato recalls meeting the fan and invites her to come onstage to sing. "Give it up to my friend who inspired me earlier," she tells the room of screaming Lovatics, with her special fan at her side.

Her fans are a big part of "Stay Strong," voicing their own testimonials about how they found strength in Lovato, her story and her music. "My fans have been really receptive towards me. They've really welcomed me into their arms after everything I've been through, so I'm really thankful for them," she told MTV News. "They also stand by my side and support me no matter what, which is an amazing feeling."

She's set to welcome fans into her life when "Stay Strong" debuts today (March 6) at 10 p.m. ET/PT on MTV, followed by a live Q&A with the star during "The After Show" at 11 p.m. ET/PT.

"I've just been working at it a day at a time and have been trying to continue to fight my hardest," she told MTV News. "And I've had my ups and downs, and I'm still trying, but overall, it's been a really great journey, and I'm thankful for everything that I've been through."

Don't miss "Demi Lovato: Stay Strong," debuting at 10 p.m. ET/PT today (March 6) on MTV.

FAMILY DRAMA: Mel B's Sister Airs DIRTY LAUNDRY On Twitter, Worried About Mel's Mental State?!

Danielle Brown, the estranged sister of Mel B. has taken to Twitter to air a lot of family drama (again) insisting the family hates her hubby and that Mel has a fragile mental state.  And she thinks Mel's kids are in DANGER.  See the tweets inside.....

Danielle Brown (shown above with Mel B in 2000), who hasn't spoken to her sister in three years, has taken to Twitter to air their family issues.

It seems as though Mel B cut off the family after marrying Stephen (whom according to Danielle, no one likes).  Now, it seems as though the sisters ONLY communicate through Twitter.  This same drama happened a couple of years ago as well when reports surfaced that Stephen and Mel had a rocky relationship and Stephen spoke out against Mel during their initial split.  The two were quickly back together.

This weekend, Mel & Danielle "allegedly" had a nasty Twitter exchange (Mel B's tweets have been deleted) about a few issues, but Mel insists all isn't what it seems.  She says her account was hacked and that Danielle had a fight with a hacker!

Danielle agrees....except she thinks the hacker was Mel's husband Stephen!

Now Danielle is sounding the alarm that Mel has a fragile mental state and needs to be away from Stephen.  She tweeted, "Enough is Enough we need a PRIVATE family meeting.you me mum and dad No Film crew no cameras and NO STEPHEN,R THE KIDS SAFE?"

This may or may not be called for.....sigh.

Here's the first exchange....

And the second......

This is ugly.  What's REALLY going on with Mel B. & her hubby and fam...

Beyonce's Baby, Britney's Betrothal And More: 2012 Predictions

We forecast the year that will be for your favorite stars, in Bigger Than the Sound.
By James Montgomery

<P>Welcome to 2012, the year that will either bring us <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2012_phenomenon" target="_blank">the end of civilization</a> as we know it or perhaps flying cars (finally!) Of course, between those two events, there's also going to be a presidential election, the London Olympics and that last "Twilight" movie (finally x 100!), not to mention a whole lot of activity within the lives of your favorite stars, too: Babies, weddings, honorary doctorates in nanotechnology; <i>this</i> is the year it'll all happen. </p><div class="player-placeholder right" id="vid:722495.id:1672369" width="240" height="211"></div><p> Which is why, with the new year upon us, I've decided to get my <a href="http://www.amazingkreskin.com/" target="_blank">Kreskin</a> on with these predictions for 2012. Don't ask me to gaze deep into my crystal ball and try to foresee who'll win the White House or the World Series, because, seriously, if I knew that, don't you think I'd be wagering right now? Instead, I'm tackling the <i>important</i> topics. Here's my 2012 forecast for the Beyonc&#233;s and Britneys of the world ... partly cloudy, with a zero-percent chance of accuracy. &#187; <a href="/music/artist/knowles_beyonce/artist.jhtml">Beyonc&#233;</a> and <a href="/music/artist/jay_z/artist.jhtml">Jay-Z</a> will welcome a daughter, who, upon her, uh, <i>release,</i> will also release her debut single, "Run the World (Me)." &#187; <a href="/music/artist/adele/artist.jhtml">Adele</a> will win every single Grammy, including a stunning upset of <i>Eres Un Farsante</i> in the Best Regional Mexican Or Tejano Album category. &#187; <a href="/music/artist/spears_britney/artist.jhtml">Britney Spears</a> and Jason Trawick will tie the knot in an elaborate, multi-denominational ceremony held &#8212; eh, I don't even care enough to finish this one. &#187; <a href="/music/artist/perry_katy/artist.jhtml">Katy Perry</a>, having finally run out of singles to release off <i>Teenage Dream,</i> will spend the entirety of 2012 shooting videos for objects around her house. Her hits will include "Toaster," "KitchenAid Tilt-Head Stand Mixer" and "This Towel Set Someone Gave Russell and I for Our Wedding That We Keep in the Guest Bathroom." &#187; <a href="/music/artist/dr_dre/artist.jhtml">Dr. Dre</a> will indefinitely scrap <i>Detox</i> and instead drop a more age-appropriate album called <i>The Chronic Arthritis.</i> &#187; <a href="/music/artist/lady_gaga/artist.jhtml">Lady Gaga</a> will wear a crazy hat or something. &#187; <a href="/music/artist/rihanna/artist.jhtml">Rihanna</a> will release six albums in 2012, each more raunchy than the last. Titles include <i>Speculum,</i> <i>[Censored] [Censored] On My [Censored],</i> and <i>Songs About F---ing,</i> which, oddly, will be a note-for-note remake of Big Black's <i>Songs About F---ing.</i> &#187; Dave Grohl is sure to do something awesome. &#187; <a href="/music/artist/drake/artist.jhtml">Drake</a>'s sweater game will become so advanced that he will surpass Bill Cosby as the world's foremost expert on multi-hued knitwear. On a related note, he will also release a comedy album called <i>To Russell, My Brother, Whom I Slept With.</i> &#187; <a href="/music/artist/minaj__nicki/artist.jhtml">Nicki Minaj</a> will stun the fashionistas when she appears at the annual Met Ball wearing a nice pantsuit she bought at Bealls. &#187; <a href="/music/artist/bieber_justin/artist.jhtml">Justin Bieber</a> will finally get that bike without the training wheels, since he's a big boy now. &#187; <a href="/music/artist/black_keys/artist.jhtml">The Black Keys</a>, buoyed by the success of their <a href="http://www.mtv.com/videos/the-black-keys/706819/lonely-boy.jhtml">"Lonely Boy" video</a>, will shoot another dance-only clip for "Gold on the Ceiling," this one set at Gallagher's 2000 and featuring nothing but topless women. Surprisingly, it will become the most-viewed music video in the history of everything. &#187; <a href="/music/artist/lil_wayne/artist.jhtml">Lil Wayne</a> will come full circle, get a tattoo <i>of</i> his face <i>on</i> his face. &#187; <a href="/music/artist/guns_n_roses/artist.jhtml">Guns N' Roses</a> will reunite at the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame induction ceremony in April, only with that dude who plays a guitar shaped like a foot filling in for Slash and Tommy Stinson replacing Duff on bass. So, actually, it won't be Guns N' Roses at all. &#187; <a href="/music/artist/coldplay/artist.jhtml">Coldplay</a>'s Chris Martin is just going to be fingerpainting everything. &#187; <a href="/music/artist/ross__rick__rap_/artist.jhtml">Rick Ross</a> will be named the Memphis Restaurant Association's Restaurateur of the Year for his tremendous achievements in <a href="http://newsroom.mtv.com/2011/08/05/rick-ross-wingstop">Wingstop-ery.</a> &#187; <a href="/music/artist/west_kanye/artist.jhtml">Kanye West</a> will <i>literally</i> explode. &#187; Fans of <a href="/music/artist/skrillex/artist.jhtml">Skrillex</a> will stop and realize that, in 1997, EDM was poised take over America too, and we ended up with Limp Bizkit as a result.</p>

Demi Lovato 'Stay Strong' Special Reflects On 'Great Journey'

Winning Favorite Pop Artist at People's Choice Awards 'was the highlight of my year,' singer says in documentary, airing Tuesday.
By Jocelyn Vena

Demi Lovato has had an interesting year, to say the least. After leaving treatment in January 2011, she focused on her work, going into the studio to make the fun — but still very personal — album Unbroken. She launched a tour that quickly became viral thanks to her emotional cover of Lil Wayne's "How to Love." She put the pieces back together, while remaining completely honest with her fans about her issues. Lovato gets personal and tells her story in the MTV documentary "Demi Lovato: Stay Strong," airing Tuesday.

"I've just been working at it a day at a time and have been trying to continue to fight my hardest," she told MTV News about still dealing with her problems. "And I've had my ups and downs, and I'm still trying, but overall it's been a really great journey, and I'm thankful for everything that I've been through."

Her single "Skyscraper" topped the charts, and her fans turned it out when she toured last fall, but there's one moment that really is the tops for Lovato: "I won Favorite Pop Artist at the People's Choice Awards," she said of the January awards ceremony where she performed her new single, "Give Your Heart a Break." "So that was the highlight of my year so far. I worked really hard towards that, and it was just amazing."

Now, though, as Lovato looks to the future, she says that anyone can rewrite their story and shift the focus to the positive. It's a message she hopes her fans can take with them. "I think it's important to make sure that people know there's a positive side to it, that you can kind of rework your story no matter what," she said. "I'm just trying to be an example for girls today."

"Demi Lovato: Stay Strong" airs at 10 p.m. ET/PT Tuesday on MTV.

'Project X': The Reviews Are In!

Critics call the found-footage teen movie immature, unfunny and even dangerous.
By Kevin P. Sullivan

"Project X" is the new found-footage movie that claims to show the most out-of-control party ever. Well, it seems like the party might be over based on the reviews the film has earned.

Critics have skewered "Project X," calling it immature, unfunny and even dangerous. For some, that might sound like a ringing endorsement of the party, but when it comes to throwing a movie together, "Project X" is much less successful.

Here is our roundup of "Project X" reviews.

The Story
"In suburban Pasadena, three exceedingly ordinary high school dudes stage a birthday bash for one of them, even though they're hardly the sort of guys that you'd expect to attract a hot crowd. Thomas (Thomas Mann), the one turning 17, whose parents are going away for the weekend, is the dutiful son who has promised — oh, has he promised! — not to mess up their home." — Owen Gleiberman, Entertainment Weekly

The Laughs
"It's billed as a comedy, but there's not a laugh to be had during the frenetic mayhem. There is also no plot beyond debauchery, nor characters beyond cardboard cutouts. Basically, it's a setting, and a familiar one: a suburban home teeming with drunken, druggie, hedonistic, irresponsible high-schoolers." — Claudia Puig, USA Today

The POV
"Aesthetically, the film sets the teeth grinding and the eyes aching. Presenting the spectacle from the p.o.v. of a home video camera documenting the event for posterity, first-time director Nima Nourizadeh and cinematographer Ken Seng swing the camera around with all the stability of a rowboat in a storm and unsurprisingly induce a strong facsimile of seasickness. The images tend to be dark and random, the music incessant." — Todd McCarthy, The Hollywood Reporter

The Parents in the Audience
"But only about an hour in, 'Project X' grows repetitive and starts running out of steam, and you begin to wonder what could possibly occur over the remaining 30 minutes or so. And not to get all mom-ish, but it does send a disturbing message to teens under the guise of 'edgy' entertainment. If you provide a setting and the means for strangers to get hammered, it will make you cool. If you are a young woman who wants approval, you must get naked and give up the goods." — Christy Lemire, The Associated Press

The Final Word
"The only people likely to buy into the oh-so-shocking exploits of the teen comedy 'Project X' are those who can't get invited to their own high school parties. Though the central blowout is as epic as advertised, so is the movie's self-congratulatory obnoxiousness." — Elizabeth Weitzman, New York Daily News

'John Carter' Early Reviews Have Arrived!

Disney has lifted the embargo, and the early reviews for "John Carter" are here. Critics are split on whether the fantasy epic lives up to expectations, but the resounding response is that "John Carter" should be seen and discussed, an unfortunately rare quality in blockbusters recently. Drew McWeeny at HitFix expressed amazement that a movie [...]

'The Lorax': The Reviews Are In!

Latest Dr. Seuss adaptation isn't winning over too many critics.

A scene from "Dr. Seuss' The Lorax"
Photo: Universal Studios

There are few authors whose oeuvre is as universally beloved as that of Dr. Seuss. The love for Dr. Seuss is so great that plenty of his stories are rife for big-screen treatment. We've seen movie versions of "The Cat in the Hat," "How the Grinch Stole Christmas" and "Horton Hears a Who," and now we have "Dr. Seuss' The Lorax," which hit theaters Friday (March 2).

Led by an all-star cast of voice talent including Taylor Swift, Zac Efron, Danny DeVito, Betty White, Ed Helms and Rob Riggle, the story follows the journey of a young boy who fights to reintroduce endangered trees to the plastic-obsessed town of Thneedville in hopes of winning a girl's heart. Despite the warm-and-fuzzy sheen of the film, critics were not as wowed by the colorful adaptation. The film currently has a 56 percent fresh rating at Rotten Tomatoes but an 85 percent positive rating from audiences.

Read on as we sift through "The Lorax" reviews!

The Adaptation
"Director Chris Renaud and writers Cinco Paul and Ken Daurio (the team responsible for 2010's 'Despicable Me') were just the right people to bring Dr. Seuss' (a.k.a. Theodor Geisel) 1971 environmental fable to vivid, eye-popping life. It has a similar blend of humor, bouncy silliness and sweetness. And it remains faithful to the spirit of Seuss. The pro-conservation, anti-consumerist message of the book is heartily intact. And, like the Seuss story, the film never resorts to sermonizing. ... Disappointingly, Seuss' trademark lilting language and clever rhymes are only sporadically integrated into the story. The film does add pleasantly loopy, if rather forgettable, songs." — Claudia Puig, USA Today

The Animation
"As with 'Horton Hears a Who!' four years ago, the production design and computer-generated animation in this new 'Lorax' respect the basic lines of Theodor Seuss Geisel's illustrations, his voluptuously curvy universe of serious whimsy. Both the 'Horton' and 'Lorax' films work better, certainly, than the live-action Seuss pictures 'How the Grinch Stole Christmas' and the seriously not-good 'Cat in the Hat.' 'The Lorax' is a little more like it. A little. But you couldn't accuse the film of practicing what it preaches: careful stewardship of a precious resource. The message tends to get lost in all the clanging slapstick and 'WALL-E' imagery. 'WALL-E' had the courage of its convictions as well as beauty and artistry; 'The Lorax' is just another OK feature-length animated edition (in 3-D, if you choose to pay for it) of a Dr. Seuss book." — Michael Phillips, The Chicago Tribune

The Final Word, Pro-Con-Pro Style
"Directors Chris Renaud and Kyle Balda and their team honor Seuss' original designs — those fuzzy-top trees and the comical bears and fish — while inventively creating the artificial world of Thneedville, where all the shrubbery is inflatable and it can be all four seasons simultaneously. While the film isn't a full-on musical, the creators weave in a handful of catchy songs that nestle comfortably in the ear and push the plot forward, a rare combo in most cartoons these days. The voice cast is just fine, with Helms' Once-ler traveling smoothly from protagonist to antagonist and back again. (A little of DeVito's hectoring Lorax goes a long way, and the film wisely doles him out in small doses.) Conservative commentators like Lou Dobbs are absolutely right when they say that 'The Lorax' preaches in favor of the environment and against corporatism and waste and the destruction of the atmosphere. Parents who find that to be a message that's somehow dangerous have every right not to go, but those Grinches, out of their terror of tree-hugging propaganda, will miss a real treat." — Alonso Duralde, TheWrap

"Don't be fooled. Despite its soft environmentalist message 'The Lorax' is an example of what it pretends to oppose. Its relationship to Dr. Seuss' book is precisely that of the synthetic trees that line the streets of Thneedville to the organic Truffulas they have displaced. The movie is a noisy, useless piece of junk, reverse-engineered into something resembling popular art in accordance with the reigning imperatives of marketing and brand extension. ... 'The Lorax,' while it nods in the direction of Dr. Seuss' distinctive, trippy drawing style, treats his sensibility as, at best, a decorative element. The movie's silliness, like its preachiness, is loud and slightly hysterical, as if young viewers could be entertained only by a ceaseless barrage of sensory stimulus and pop-culture attitude, or instructed by songs that make the collected works of Up With People sound like Metallica. The simple fable of the Lorax and the Once-ler is wrapped in gaudy, familiar business and festooned with grim, forced cheer. What do the kids want? Car chases! Kooky grandmas! Pint-size villains flanked by thuggish minions! Things that fly! Taylor Swift!" — A.O. Scott, The New York Times

"As much as this looks like Dr. Seuss, some of the most intriguing ideas of the original story have been changed and not always for the better. Altering the ending into one big happy party was slightly disappointing, if understandable. It was much more interesting that this strange creature would tell his story to a curious young boy and hope that this child would be able to plant the very last truffula tree seed. Not surprisingly, the movie changes that ambiguous hope into a happy-heavy ending. Sure it may be more child friendly, but the books weren't exclusively made for grown-ups. If done right, young viewers would be able to search for hope with a less obvious finale. Yet with all the over-the-top joyfulness and an extraneous villain, there is fun to be had with 'Dr. Seuss' The Lorax.' This is an enjoyable kid's flick with a message for a new generation. The environmental aspect might anger a few people but that same idea is in the book itself, there is nothing new about that here. Much like Bob Holt's take on him, I really warmed up to the character of the Lorax and what DeVito brings to this little critter that speaks for the trees. And yes, Betty White voices another wacky grandma, and everybody loves her, right?" — Jimmy O, JoBlo.com
