Lady Gaga's Born This Way Ball Kicks Off Amid Protests

Seoul, South Korea, set list heavy on new material, but Gaga's biggest hits come out to play.

Lady Gaga kicked off her hotly awaited Born This Way Ball at Seoul, South Korea's Olympic Stadium on Friday (April 27) in front of 45,000 fans, and despite protests from Christian groups saying Mother Monster was "obscene" and could "taint" young people with her performance, the concert appears to have gone on without incident.

Intrepid Twitter fans are already showing off pictures and video of the BTW Ball's enormous Gothic castle backdrop and myriad costume changes, making it clear that Gaga has outdone even her own Monster Ball in terms of spectacle.

While we wait for reviews to trickle in from halfway around the world, one thing is certain: No minors were corrupted at the show. Earlier this month, the Korea Media Rating Board decided to elevate the age rating for the concert from 12 to 18, prohibiting minors from seeing the concert. When the board notified Gaga's tour promotion company and a sponsor of the change in age restrictions, it did not offer a reason why the show — which at the time was still in rehearsals and had not been reviewed publicly — was considered unsuitable for children under 18.

The likely catalyst for the board's decision came more into focus as the concert neared and protests from a group of conservative Christians calling itself the Alliance for Sound Culture in Sexuality ramped up. The group covered Seoul with posters accusing Gaga of "spreading unhealthy sexual culture" through "lewd lyrics and performances."

The superstar and her fans, however, were undeterred. Though she tweeted her hopes that the Korea Media Rating Board would reverse its decision (it didn't), she continued on as planned. Many fans reportedly arrived at the show wearing versions of Gaga's most well-known flamboyant costumes, and there have been no reports of disturbances at the concert.

Before the show, Gaga tweeted, "I can you hear you Korea. I'm shaking."

Gaga's performance was heavy on material from her Born this Way album, though her biggest hits, including "Bad Romance," Poker Face" and "Just Dance," were represented.

Britney Spears Nears 'X Factor' Deal

Pop star would reportedly bank $15 million to join judges' panel on Simon Cowell's reality competition.

News first broke in early March that the pop star was in negotiations to join the judges' panel on Fox's reality singing competition, and just as speculation seemed to be dying down, <a href="http://www.deadline.com/2012/04/britney-spears-nears-deal-for-the-x-factor/" target="_blank">Deadline</a> reports that Spears' team and show producers have reached agreements on several key contract details, including the star's salary. <embed src="http://media.mtvnservices.com/mgid:uma:video:mtv.com:698603/cp~vid%3D698603%26uri%3Dmgid%3Auma%3Avideo%3Amtv.com%3A698603" width="460" height="260" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowFullScreen="true" allowScriptAccess="always" base="."></embed> It was reported that Spears was being offered $10 million for a season of the show, but the latest news is that her offer is actually closer to $15 million, which is $3 million more than Jennifer Lopez earns as a judge on "American Idol." Several stars — from Janet Jackson and Mariah Carey to, at one time, the late <a href="/news/articles/1679472/american-idol-voice-x-factor-simon-cowell.jhtml">Whitney Houston</a> — have reportedly been discussed as possible replacements for <a href="/news/articles/1678191/paula-abdul-exits-x-factor.jhtml">Nicole Scherzinger and Paula Abdul</a>, though no deals have been announced. The buzz surrounding Spears seems to be the most reliable, as sources close to the show report that her fiancé and former agent Jason Trawick is actively negotiating the deal. Cowell reportedly reached out to Spears personally to gauge her interest in joining the show and has been singing her praises publicly, saying in a March conference call with reporters that he is "fascinated" by Spears and believes work on "The X Factor" will be easy for the hardworking singer. "This girl has resilience. I would think that if she's managed to sustain a family, a career, which is tough, ["X Factor" would be] a walk in the park," Cowell said. "I would be fascinated to hear what she has to say. She's still hot, she's still having hit records and she's still controversial. There's a reason for that." A point of conflict has reportedly been Cowell's insistence that Spears sign a two-year contract with the show, while she wants the option of opting out after just one season if she feels the gig is not a good fit. Britney Spears' Fiance Granted Legal Control Of Singer

<a href="http://www.mtv.com/music/artist/spears_britney/artist.jhtml">Britney Spears</a>' fiancé, Jason Trawick, has been granted his wish to become her co-conservator. The talent agent's request was approved by a Los Angeles judge Wednesday (April 25). Spears' former agent-turned-paramour <a href="http://www.mtv.com/news/articles/1682699/britney-spears-fiance-legal-control.jhtml">petitioned the Los Angeles Superior Court earlier this month</a> to become the pop star's co-conservator. He will share the responsibility with Spears' father, Jamie Spears, who has maintained legal control of his daughter since February 2008. According to <a href="http://www.people.com/people/article/0,,20590448,00.html" target="_blank">People magazine</a>, Spears' father is delighted with the court's decision. "Jamie's thrilled," attorney Geraldine Wyle told reporters following the hearing, referring to Spears' father. "It's all in the family." Wyle also made a point to clarify the fact that the request to add Trawick as co-conservator came at Britney's request, not her father's. The 41-year-old will not have control of Spears' multimillion-dollar estate or career but will share responsibility with Jamie Spears for the singer's "general well-being," including decisions regarding food, clothing and medical care. Jamie Spears took steps to <a href="http://www.people.com/people/article/0,,20175487,00.html" target="_blank">gain legal control</a> over his daughter's affairs in 2008 following a spate of increasingly erratic behavior that culminated in Britney's brief stay at UCLA Medical Center. In the years since, Spears has appeared to get her life solidly back on track, releasing two multiplatinum albums, launching two successful world tours and regaining custody of her young sons, Sean Preston and Jayden James. The current status of Spears' conservatorship is reportedly more of a "formality" than anything else. 'Raven' Star John Cusack On Becoming Poe: There's An App For That

Actor opens up about the challenges of getting into the tortured mind of Edgar Allan Poe.

It goes without saying that in order to achieve an impressive onscreen performance, an actor must enter into the mind, body, and environment of the character he or she is portraying. While fictionalized characters require imagination and innovation, historical figures depend on research and character study. And few historical individuals are more dark, complex and mysterious than Edgar Allan Poe.

MTV News recently spoke with veteran thespian John Cusack, who portrays the legendary poet and storyteller in the upcoming film "The Raven", and asked what it takes to really enter into the world of such a puzzling man.

"It's like an app, right? Like on your phone, 'Go to Darkness.' You press the Poe app," Cusack joked.

"That's sort of how the psyche works, too, in a way," he clarified. "So, I think you just try to activate it and bring it to life."

So, how did Cusack bring it to life? On top of reading Poe's works and studied his biography, healso tried to tap into his emotions.

"If you think of movies like in a dream language, then there's kind of a dream logic to it," Cusack said. "And then you just follow the feelings. You use the feelings, I think that's what it is."

"The Raven" hits theaters April 27, so fans of Poe and his stories will soon discover how Cusack brings the horror-writer back to life.

'Prometheus' Could Land R Rating, Will Be Released 'Uncut' Regardless

'We will stand behind it 100 percent and if that means it's an R, then so be it,' Fox chief Tom Rothman tells MTV News.

Fresh off the release of a visually stunning new "Prometheus" featurette — which we can't stop talking about here at MTV News — comes this excellent tidbit from Fox studio chief Tom Rothman regarding the film's still-to-be-determined rating, which could very likely be an R.

"The rating board has not opined yet and it will go in to the board soon," Rothman told us on the press line for the studio's CinemaCon panel. "This I can tell you and I can tell all the fans, not one frame will be cut. The movie will be what it should be. We will not cut a frame of the film," he promised. "We will stand behind it 100 percent and if that means it's an R, then so be it, because not an ounce, not a percentage are we going to compromise the film."

Rothman went on to say that the film does indeed live up to the hype surrounding it and that he genuinely couldn't wait to see each and every new cut, visual effect and element added to the film during it's post-production.

"When we first saw the movie in 3-D, it's breathtaking," he said. "So I hope [it lives up to the hype]. I think so, I believe so." The excitable studio chief also explained his reasoning behind the title "Prometheus" and why they chose to leave the word "Alien" out of it altogether.

"I think the easy thing would have been to make an 'Alien' prequel and that's where it started as an idea, but it evolved," he said. "Ridley's ideas are much bigger than that and it really is a brand-new film, and this is the man who made 'Blade Runner.' He hasn't made a science-fiction film in 30 years, and to be honest, I didn't want to undersell it. 'Prometheus' is an ambitious title I hope everybody knows — it's the name of the ship in the movie but also [based on] the god who stole fire from the gods and gave it to man and paid a serious price for it, so be careful what you do. The cautionary guy, Prometheus," he joked.

Rothman said "Prometheus" is not just a movie for "Alien" fans. "It's a big, bold new-idea movie and we want it in the title because people know [that] this movie stands on its own," Rothman added. "If you're a fan of 'Alien,' great. But if you're not, it's entirely self-contained and full of new ideas."

The Warner Bros. panel at CinemaCon was among one of the most highly anticipated of the gatherings of film fans, journalists and theater owners. Rumors of footage from Peter Jackson's "The Hobbit" at a revolutionary 48 frames per second and potential appearance from Christopher Nolan and "The Dark Knight Rises" made the panel a can't-miss event.

Soon after the conclusion of the panel, bloggers and journalists from across the industry shared their immediate reactions with the world, and the results spell good things for Batman fans, but could mean doom for those awaiting a return to Middle Earth.

"The Dark Knight Rises" was an expected but unannounced feature of the panel, and the reaction so far on Twitter has been unanimously positive.

"THE DARK KNIGHT RISES footage was as awesome as you'd expect. Saw footage of 'The Bat' in action. IMAX stuff looks sick. Nolan is amazing" — Steven Weintraub, Collider

The reactions to the 48-fps footage from 'The Hobbit,' however, were less than stellar. Many complained that the faster frame rate did not look like a film, but most agreed that the bump improved the quality of the 3-D. The footage included several scenes, including the famous sequence of Bilbo challenging Gollum to a series of riddles.

It's likely this will only be the beginning of the 48 fps date, as several films, including James Cameron's proposed "Avatar" sequels, are planning to utilize the technology.

Baz Luhrmann's "Great Gatsby" also showed off footage for the first time to the public, but its 3-D was received much more warmly.

'Twilight' Star's Nude Photo Scandal Rare For Young Cast

Kiowa Gordon's leaked pics might seem standard for young Hollywood, but 'Twilight' Tuesday notes that the cast has largely avoided scandal.

With all the glitz and glamour associated with being a young celebrity in Hollywood, it's hard to imagine there are any cons to fame and fortune. It's safe to say that one of the more precarious aspects of being universally recognized is the fact that any time a celebrity does anything worth a tweet, photograph or snarky comment, they have the potential to generate many a headline.

The amount of news coverage a star commands depends, of course, on the level of public interest, for which the minute details in the lives of Justin Bieber, Kim Kardashian and the "Twilight" cast are of great importance.

A lot of the newer stars find out about their headline-generating factor the hard way, as has been the case with Kiowa Gordon and a batch of private photos that were posted to a pornographic website. Never mind the unfortunate circumstances surrounding the incident; by all appearances, Gordon is doing his best to resolve the matter and move on. The "nude photos discovered" headline is so prevalent in pop culture that it's almost expected.

Speaking of expectations, because there are so many ways in which a young celeb might be photographed doing something naughty — they're teenagers, for cryin' out loud! — I think we can all take a moment to appreciate the fact that on the whole, the entire "Twilight" cast has done an excellent job in upholding the ideals associated with their role-model statues. There have been a few leaked photos here and there but no evidence of any kind of truly inappropriate behavior that is often associated with young stars. It really is an amazing feat when you think about how many young actors we're talking about and how scrutinized they are. When I think about some of the dumb things I did in my teens, I thank my lucky stars that Facebook and Twitter were not around. I can't even begin to think about how difficult it would be to navigate as a young celebrity.

So as much as we love to obsess over our favorite stars, let's try to not sweat the small stuff and appreciate them for being worthy of our continued admiration.

Jennifer Lawrence In Talks For 'Glass Castle' Movie

'Hunger Games' star may land a lead role in the film adaptation of Jeannette Walls' best-selling memoir.

With the success of "The Hunger Games," it's no surprise Jennifer Lawrence is a sought-after leading lady. With three films hitting theaters this fall — including "House at the End of the Street" and "The Silver Linings Playbook" — she has a busy schedule, but it looks like Lawrence might add another project to her repertoire.

Deadline Hollywood reports that Lionsgate's production president, Erik Feig, has acquired the rights to gossip columnist Jeanette Walls' best-seller "The Glass Castle: A Memoir." Gil Netter ("The Blind Side") is set to produce and Marti Noxon ("Buffy the Vampire Slayer," "I Am Number Four") is attached to pen the script.

Walls' book follows her nomadic childhood as she grew up moving around the Southwest desert with her parents and three siblings. When he was sober, her father Rex nurtured his children's imagination and taught them to embrace life. Her mother Rose Mary was an artist who would rather paint and write than be responsible for her family. When their money was finally gone, they returned to West Virginia where her father drank and stole and Walls and her siblings were forced to support each other. While her tale seems grim, she paints her parents in a loving light because, despite her family's flaws, they played a huge role in her success. Upon its release in 2005, the book spent more than 250 weeks on the New York Times Best Sellers list, which was a first for any memoir.

The story is a departure from the male-centered movies Lionsgate usually releases. They're known for films such as "Warrior," "The Lincoln Lawyer," "Abduction" and "Conan the Barbarian." But perhaps with the overwhelming success of "Hunger Games" and its strong heroine, the company will focus on more female-lead narratives.

And in a new, candid interview with Oprah Winfrey on her show "<a href="http://www.oprah.com/own-oprahs-next-chapter/Sneak-Preview-Oprah-Interviews-Lady-Gaga-and-Her-Mother-Video" target="_blank">Oprah's Next Chapter</a>," Mother Monster chats about someday actually becoming a mother. "Yes, I want kids, I want a soccer team and I want a husband," she said in the special, which airs Sunday on Winfrey's OWN cable network. "Yeah, I do. Well, you know, I'm being superfluous. I don't want to have one kid. "I just have one thing to say before we get started: We got Oprah! ... Thank you from all of us — from my entire team, from my mother, from the bottom of the hearts of so many people who believe in what we're doing today," Gaga said at the launch. She explained that the foundation seeks to empower the youth of America, adding, "How can we inspire young people to know they have the power to be brave?"
