'Casa De Mi Padre': The Reviews Are In!

Critics are divided over Will Ferrell's campy telenovela parody.
By Kara Warner

At this point in his storied career, Will Ferrell has taught his fans to expect the unexpected. His latest film, "Casa de Mi Padre," is a perfect example. The outrageous, purposefully campy and telenovela-esque flick is most certainly not a movie for everyone, and critics are divided on whether its ridiculousness is fun or just plain ridiculous; it currently has a 46 percent Fresh rating over at Rotten Tomatoes. Vamanos a las criticas de "Casa de Mi Padre"!

The Premise:
"Will Ferrell, speaking passable Spanish (with English subtitles), plays Armando Alvarez, a Mexican rancher hot for the fiancée (Genesis Rodriguez) of his brother (Diego Luna) and in a death battle with a drug lord (Gael García Bernal). Luckily, Ferrell is at his funniest being serious. 'Casa de Mi Padre,' shot in 24 days for $6 million, is really an 'SNL'-ish sketch stretched to feature length. But Ferrell is an hombre loco. Mi gusta." — Peter Travers, Rolling Stone

The Mexploitation Factor:
"Is 'Casa de Mi Padre' brilliant or pointless? Indubitably it's both, as Ron Burgundy might put it. It's a parody of something so specific that it never quite existed in the first place: the Mexican telenovela plus the spaghetti western plus the straight-to-VHS action flicks of the '70s, maybe. If you fell asleep in the hot-tub time machine and woke up stoned in 1982, this is the movie you'd find yourself watching on some UHF channel (right after the soccer match between Tigres and Toluca). Some of its gags absolutely fall flat — having a climactic action scene replaced with still photos of miniatures is pretty funny, while an on-screen note apologizing for it is not — but considered as a whole it's a wonderful and hilarious phenomenon, most of it is executed to Dadaist perfection." — Andrew O'Hehir, Salon.com

The Ferrell Factor:
"The folks who dislike Will Ferrell always will. He's furry. He's childish. He was kind of creepy in 'Elf.' He has this beady-eyed way of puffing his cheeks and fixing his gaze that makes his entire face look like a butt imprinted with raisins. But mostly, the haters hate him because he's weird. Eccentricity is a tough sell at the movies, with exceptions made, now and then. But as the telenovela parody 'Casa de Mi Padre' clearly demonstrates, Ferrell is a surrealist prankster of the most confounding type. If he were more pretentious about it, more stuffily highbrow and art-house-ready, he might be hailed as a shrewd absurdist commentator on the loonier conventions of contemporary film and life. ... ['Casa de Mi Padre' is] 84 minutes of maximum Ferrellian oddness. Fans, this one included, will find the loopy, elongated comic rhythms both familiar and hilarious; you can always count on Ferrell to push each joke about 30 seconds past the point of normalcy. And you can always count on him to be weird." — Amy Biancolli, The San Francisco Chronicle

The Final Word, Pro-Con-Pro Style:
"The biggest joke in 'Casa de Mi Padre' is that Mr. Ferrell speaks Spanish without winking throughout the hyperserious proceedings, and as he often does, he turns his character's innocence into a strange state of grace. The sincerity of his performance makes Armando seem foolish and therefore funnier, at least when he has enough good material. Mr. Bernal and Mr. Luna, by contrast, mostly seem to be having a goof playing cowboys and narcos, and their barely contained smiles, however shining, work against Mr. Ferrell's commitment and undermine the movie's poker-faced interests. 'Casa de Mi Padre' is best when it stops pretending that anyone, including the filmmakers, cares about the pointless story, which also includes too much unfunny business with a few American lawmen that wastes the mustachioed brilliance of Nick Offerman. Far better are its oases of absurdity, like an increasingly preposterous sex scene featuring the inevitably naked Mr. Ferrell, once again flaunting his furred assets, and a lysergic trip to the other side with a conspicuously ersatz white leopard whose coat is almost as matted." — Manohla Dargis, The New York Times

"The film feels ultimately hollow, perhaps because mocking soap operas is the comic's equivalent of shooting fish tacos in a barrel. In fact, the concept for 'Casa de Mi Padre' seems born out of one too many tequila-infused evenings in the Funny or Die writers' room — unsurprisingly, director Matt Piedmont and writer Andrew Steele are both Funny or Die and 'Saturday Night Live' veterans. The movie has a deliberate cheapness that grows tiring — self-contained 'outdoor' sets, sex scenes with mannequin body doubles, and what must be the worst puppet the Jim Henson Workshop has ever built. Its theatrical release feels like a mistake: Surely this belongs online? Or on Comedy Central at 3:00 a.m.?" — Andrew Lapin, NPR

"Ferrell, though, mostly plays it straight (it takes all of 30 seconds to get used to him speaking impeccable Spanish), and so does the movie. And that, in a funny way, is the joke: that Ferrell went this far to do a faux-Mexican genre potboiler with nary a laugh line. Even if you choose to experience 'Casa de Mi Padre' as a postmodern wink at the audience, it's a very abstract wink. Yet if you take the film on its own terms, as a kind of Elvis movie dipped in guacamole, it's quirkily engrossing. Ferrell is a good straight actor for the same reason that he's an inspired comedian: He commits himself to every moment. Even in a movie whose highest ambition is to be true to its quaintly delectable tackiness." — Owen Gleiberman, Entertainment Weekly

Does Britney Spears Have 'The X Factor'?

MTV News takes a look at the pros and cons of bringing Spears onboard as a judge for the reality singing competition.
By John Mitchell

<P>The news that <a href="http://www.mtv.com/music/artist/spears_britney/artist.jhtml">Britney Spears</a> is reportedly in final negotiations to <a href="/news/articles/1680782/britney-spears-x-factor-judge-offer.jhtml">join "The X Factor"</a> has set the <a href="http://newsroom.mtv.com">MTV Newsroom</a> on fire. Opinion on whether the pop star is a good fit for the reality singing competition has been sharply divided, so we decided to take on the topic the way we're sure Simon Cowell did before making Spears a reported $10 million offer: a good, old-fashioned pros and cons list. </P><P> </P><P><embed src="http://media.mtvnservices.com/mgid:uma:video:mtv.com:698603/cp~vid%3D698603%26uri%3Dmgid%3Auma%3Avideo%3Amtv.com%3A698603" width="460" height="260" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowFullScreen="true" allowScriptAccess="always" base="."></embed> </P><P> </P><P><big><b>Pro: She'll attract viewers</b></big><br> </P><P>The <a href="/news/articles/1671220/x-factor-simon-cowell-ratings.jhtml">debut season of "The X Factor"</a> performed well below expectations. Its heavily hyped premiere pulled in 12.1 million total viewers and a meager 4.4/12 rating in the advertiser-coveted 18 to 49 demographic. That's about half of what the 2011 season of "American Idol" averaged ("Idol" is having its own ratings woes this season), and it didn't even win the night: Emmy-winning sitcom "Modern Family" drew 14.3 million viewers and a 6.0/15 for its season premiere. </P><P> </P><P>The poor ratings precipitated the overhaul that saw judges <a href="/news/articles/1678191/paula-abdul-exits-x-factor.jhtml">Paula Abdul and Nicole Scherzinger</a> and host Steve Jones fired from the show. </P><P> </P><P>There's no question that Spears would bring viewers to "The X Factor." She enjoys a large and devout fanbase who will basically follow her just about anywhere. And beyond her own fans, Spears' celebrity would also likely draw attention from the general public, who will tune in simply to see how she does. </P><P> </P><P><big><b> Con: She's become nervous on camera </b></big><br> </P><P> </P><P>Though she can still wow a crowd live in concert, as evidenced by last year's successful tour behind her hit album <i>Femme Fatale,</i> Spears has become increasingly tentative during interviews. She rarely grants on-camera sit-downs, and when she does, she seems nervous and uncomfortable. </P><P> </P><P>To be a strong judge or mentor on a reality show, you have to be <i>very</i> comfortable on camera. Part of what made Jennifer Lopez click last season on "Idol" was that she came across as confident, direct and often empathetic. She even broke down in tears after <a href="/news/articles/1658584/americaon-idol-top-24.jhtml">sending home contestant Chris Medina</a>, whose fiancée suffered a severe brain injury in a car accident. The key word here is <i>after.</i> It's hard to imagine Spears being able to keep it together and deliver such difficult news in similar circumstances. </P><P>It's worth noting that a high-drama situation arose on the first season of "The X Factor" -- one that left <a href="/news/articles/1675936/x-factor-rachel-crow-elimination-reaction.jhtml">contestant Rachel Crow sobbing</a> onstage and Scherzinger a wreck ... a wreck who received <a href="http://www.thefablife.com/2011-12-05/paula-abdul-and-nicole-scherzinger-receive-death-threats-after-the-x-factor-elimination/" target="_blank">death threats</a>. Producers should also consider whether it's wise to send Spears, who has dealt with emotional issues in the past, into a genre that thrives when the emotional stakes are high. </P><P> </P><P><big><b>Pro: she is a contemporary artist</b></big><br> </P><P>One of the things we like most about <a href="/news/articles/1680496/the-voice-battle-rounds.jhtml">"The Voice"</a> is that its judges &#8212; Christina Aguilera, Cee Lo Green, Adam Levine and Blake Shelton &#8212; are all active artists. They are all still hitting the studio to make hit records, and that lends a great deal of credibility to their opinions when they critique a contestant's performance. We don't mean to slight Abdul or Scherzinger, but you could argue that a legacy singer who hasn't released an album in over 17 years and a performer who has had a difficult time getting her own solo singing career off the ground aren't the best judges of who does and does not have "The X Factor." </P><P> </P><P>On the other hand, Spears may be. <a href="http://newsroom.mtv.com/2011/03/29/britney-spears-femme-fatale-reviews/">Last year's <i>Femme Fatale</i></a> gave Spears three top-10 singles &#8212; the most of any of her seven albums &#8212; and earned some of the best reviews of her career. While it's true that she did not write or produce much of the record, she was most certainly involved in picking her collaborators, which actually could speak well of her ability to know talent when she sees it. Spears also smartly chose red-hot rapper Nicki Minaj to open on the North American leg of her tour. </P><P> </P><P>When it comes to the contemporary pop music scene, Spears knows what works. </P><P> </P><P><big><b>Con: She's not known for her singing</b></big><br> </P><P>Unlike Aguilera, whose talent as a vocalist is indisputable, Spears is not known for her singing. By signing her to judge and mentor a singing competition, "X Factor" producers are setting themselves up for inevitable criticism. "Who is Britney Spears to judge a singing competition?" critics will scream (and they won't be wrong). </P><P> </P><P>When Aguilera critiques a performer's vocals, she speaks with authority &#8212; and her ear for singing proved to make her the most discerning judge on the "Voice" panel during the <a href="/news/articles/1679565/the-voice-christina-aguilera-jonathas-usher.jhtml">blind auditions</a>. Spears' judging style will likely be based on liking what's already there, but she's not going to have much insight on missed notes or pitch, which will cripple her ability to further mentor her team. How can she help them improve as vocalists when it's a truth universally acknowledged that she's not really a vocalist herself? </P><P> </P><P><i>Do you think Britney Spears is a good choice for "The X Factor"? Let us know in the comments below.</i></p>

'21 Jump Street': The Reviews Are In!

Critics mostly agree that Jonah Hill and Channing Tatum's undercover cop comedy is 'a vibrant reboot of a rather forgettable '80s TV series.'
By Eric Ditzian

Where my laughs at?

We've been suffering through a far-too-serious start at the 2012 box office. The first three-and-a-half months of the year have been dominated by weepy dramas ("The Vow"), kid-friendly animated fare ("The Lorax"), middling horror flicks ("The Devil Inside") and films that should have kept geek flags around the country flying high but instead could barely inspire a gust of nerdy enthusiasm ("John Carter," "Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance"). Even the adventure-comedy "Journey 2: The Mystery Island" — #4, somehow, on the year's top-grossing-movies list — elicited more forehead-smacking guffaws than genuine belly laughs.

"21 Jump Street" is about to change all of that. As our friends over at NextMovie put it, Jonah Hill's new film is the "first must-see comedy of the year." The majority of critics agree, praising the movie's big laughs, star players and killer supporting performances. Read on for a deep dive into the "21 Jump Street" reviews.

The Story
"Jonah Hill and Channing Tatum as novice cops who are forced to go undercover as high-school students to bust up a drug ring? Come on, that movie's going to blow, right? But '21 Jump Street' doesn't blow — which could have been this movie's raunchy, self-deprecating tagline if it didn't already have several. '21 Jump Street' isn't a wild, fresh reinvention of the movie-cliché-spoofing genre — this isn't 'Airplane!' we're talking about — but it's also not a drearily overfamiliar retread of it." — Dana Stevens, Slate

The Laughs
"A vibrant reboot of a rather forgettable '80s TV series sounds nearly impossible to pull off. And yet '21 Jump Street' accomplishes it with a fresh script, flip humor and inspired casting. ... It's no surprise that Hill, as bumbling officer Schmidt, generates so many laughs. But who would expect Tatum, as the dimwitted officer Jenko, to be so comical? More often cast as a standard heartthrob — most recently in the sappy 'The Vow' — Tatum holds his own with Hill and every other comic actor in the film. Their chemistry is terrific." — Claudia Puig, USA Today

The Supporting Players
"Rob Riggle as a blustery coach, Chris Parnell as a self-important drama teacher, Jake Johnson as a fed-up principal, Ellie Kemper as a science teacher with the hots and then some for Jenko -- they're all about as hilarious as can be while barely being there. With Jenko falling out with Schmidt, Schmidt falling for classmate Molly (the utterly adorable Brie Larson) and Capt. Dickson breathing down both of their necks, there are already plenty of hijinks to go around, and that's not even mentioning a couple of cameos." — William Goss, Film.com

The Dissenters
"At times '21 Jump Street' seems sufficiently clever and sly to avoid the pitfalls that befall most movie adaptations of TV series. In the early going, it mocks its own existence, its embrace of clichés, and, indeed, the very conceit at its heart. ... But directors Phil Lord and Chris Miller quickly abandon any pretense that they wish to puncture the silliness of the idea and, instead, embrace it. And after that capitulation, the film becomes a hit-and-miss hodgepodge of plotting and jokes redolent at least as often of desperation as of inspiration." — Shawn Levy, The Oregonian

The Final Word
" '21 Jump Street' admits from the start, in a nicely timed and very meta joke, that it's really just an attempt to mine the past for nostalgia and ideas -- in this case, adapting a somewhat beloved '80s TV show about undercover cops in high school. But while that might have been Sony's goal when they set up the movie with star and producer Jonah Hill, the movie itself is more of an excuse to combine a surprisingly touching buddy story with wild, absurdist comedy.... Unpredictable and very silly but with real emotional stakes, '21 Jump Street' makes up for a shaggy script with a wily, endearing energy that feels like anything but a tired retread." — Katey Rich, Cinema Blend

Foo Fighters, Mumford & Sons On Upset Alert In Musical March Madness

With first-round voting open until Sunday at midnight, a host of MMM favorites appear headed for an early exit ... unless you vote them through.
By James Montgomery

It's been a wild opening week in the 2012 Musical March Madness tournament, with plenty of potential upsets in the works and even more allegations of voter fraud levied by angry Tokio Hotel fans (a yearly MMM tradition!)

And while there's still time to vote in all first-round matchups — polls close Sunday at midnight ET — as the week wraps up, we figured it was a good time to recap all the action: the shocking results, the 4chan-inspired chicanery and all the fierce, fan-driven mania that makes Musical March Madness tick.

Vote for your favorite band, discuss and share on Facebook and Twitter in the MTV Musical March Madness interactive bracket!

But first, let's address the allegations lobbed by Tokio Hotel's fervent fanbase. After jumping out to a huge lead over fifth-seeded Arcade Fire in their first-round matchup (something like 140,000 votes), TH's supporters watched in abject horror as the Fire quickly closed the gap and eventually took the lead. Gains of this size don't happen every day, so we started getting a lot of feedback from Tokio fans, most claiming that there was something fishy happening with the votes (of course, others just said we were part of a massive conspiracy against their beloved Kaulitz brothers).

Since the integrity of MMM is our top priority, we investigated, and it turns out those fans were right. It seems some overzealous, web-savvy fans were helping swing things in Arcade Fire's favor, writing scripts that repeatedly voted for AF ... and we mean repeatedly (like 90,000 times each). And while that level of cheating was definitely inspired, well, it's still cheating, so we scrubbed all the votes in question, and returned Tokio Hotel to their rightful lead. They're up by some 200,000 votes at the moment, and appear a lock to advance to the second round. We'll be monitoring things much closer from here on out, but, for the moment, all is right with the world. And please, let's keep it clean, folks. Cheaters never win.

Of course, there are still plenty of other eye-opening (and legitimate) results to discuss as the first round wraps up, perhaps none more shocking than the upset brewing in the East region, where top-seeded Mumford & Sons are on the verge of getting booted from the tourney by Canadian crushers F---ed Up (we see you, Damian!) Right now, it's the underdogs in the lead by nearly 11,000 votes, and we'll be watching to see if they can hold on to the lead. Mumford fans, you've got your work cut out for you if you want to keep your favorite band in the tourney, so get cracking.

Things are looking equally grim for the West's #1 seed, the Foo Fighters, who are getting absolutely blasted by #16 James Durbin. The "American Idol" bandanna enthusiast surged to the lead early in the week, and has yet to wilt beneath the Foos' full-court press. Can he keep it up through Sunday? We'll just have to wait and see, but it appears like Durbin may be bound for round two.

Vote for your favorite band, discuss and share on Facebook and Twitter in the MTV Musical March Madness interactive bracket!

And while both of those matchups are verging on blowouts, others are too close to call, and probably will remain that way until the last vote is counted. The West's #3 seed, Blink-182, are getting all they can handle from #14 Korn, and the East's #3, Florence and the Machine, are on the brink of getting booted by reunited Swedish vets Refused, who hold a slim (like 2,000 votes) lead. Also in the East, #6 Fun. fell behind #11 Semi Precious Weapons early, but have rallied, and now lead by roughly 1,000 votes. Oh, and there's quite a battle brewing between Maroon 5 and upset-minded Lana Del Rey, who have been locked in a fierce back-and-forth all week. Right now, it's Del Rey by less than 2,000 votes. Can she shock the world? We'll be watching closely.

And speaking of shocking the world, there's a potential game-changer taking place in the East's Coldplay/Arctic Monkeys tilt, where the Monkeys lead Chris Martin and company by just 200 votes. These two have been going back and forth all week, and this one seems destined to go down to the wire. And that's fitting ... like we said, it's been a wild ride already.

Is your favorite band on the ropes? Get voting. And check back Monday, when we reveal the 32 bands that will move one step closer to hoisting the big gold trophy on April 3.

MTV's 2012 Musical March Madness Tournament is under way! Voting in the first round runs until midnight ET on Sunday, March 18, and winners are determined by fan votes, so if your favorite act made the cut, it'll be up to you to guide them to glory. You can rally the troops on Twitter using the hashtag #MMM or by downloading one of our custom badges — but get ready, it's gonna be a war!

Beyonce's First Post-Baby Appearance Was Picture-'Perfect'

'It's perfect for this private couple,' one celebrity expert tells MTV News of B's low-key NYC outing.
By Jocelyn Vena

<P>It was only a month ago that fans were wondering when the first images of new mom <a href="http://www.mtv.com/music/artist/knowles_beyonce/artist.jhtml">Beyonc&#233;</a> might hit the Net. On Monday night, those questions were answered. Just four weeks after giving birth to daughter <a href="/news/articles/1677033/blue-ivy-beyonce-jay-z-leaves-hospital.jhtml">Blue Ivy</a>, B was back on the scene to celebrate hubby <a href="/news/articles/1678669/jay-z-carnegie-hall.jhtml">Jay-Z's first show at Carnegie Hall</a>. </P><P> </P><P></p><div class="player-placeholder right" id="vid:731725" width="240" height="211"></div><p> </P><P> </P><P>Wearing a form-fitting red dress, she hit up a post-show party held at Jay's 40/40 Club in New York City. And while <a href="http://rapfix.mtv.com/2012/02/07/beyonce-carnegie-hall-jay-z-show">Beyonc&#233; could have premiered</a> her <a href="/news/articles/1678670/beyonce-post-baby-appearance-jay-z.jhtml">post-baby body</a> on a splashy red carpet, celebrity experts note that the more understated move is very B. </P><P> </P><P>"It's perfect for this private couple. She didn't make a big deal walking a red carpet at an award show or posing on the cover of a magazine," Huffington Post celebrity columnist Rob Shuter told MTV News on Tuesday (February 7). "Beyonc&#233; made it as low-key an event as possible and at the same time plugged her husband's club." </P><P> </P><P><b><a href="http://rapfix.mtv.com/2012/02/08/beyonce-photos-carnegie-hall-night-two/">Check out more photos from B's night out!</a></b> </P><P> </P><P>For the appearance, Beyonc&#233; was decked out in a fiery-red Temperley London dress, Christian Louboutin heels and an Alexander McQueen clutch. While that may sound very glam, another expert was surprised by just how modest the look actually was. </P><P> </P><P>"Beyonc&#233; looks amazing in her first post-baby appearance. Even thought it made sense for her to make her debut last night to show her support for her husband and the charity his concert benefited, her outfit was fairly simple," celebrity editor <a href="http://gossipdavid.com" target="_blank">David Caplan</a> said. </P><P> </P><P>"I expected her to make her post-baby debut at a really glitzy event or awards show, like maybe the <a href="http://www.mtv.com/news/grammys">Grammys</a>, in a gorgeous gown and really steal the show. But clearly she wanted to be seen, since she even posted photos of herself right away on her website, which stars don't typically do &#8212; they'll just let the media pick up and run the photos." </P><P> </P><P></p><div class="player-placeholder right" id="vid:724228.id:1676907" width="240" height="211"></div><p> </P><P> </P><P>So, will B and Jay play it just as cool when it comes to releasing the first shot of their newborn? "It will be a [paparazzi] shot taken on the beach or when the couple is on vacation," Shuter predicted. "They won't reveal the baby to get a [magazine] cover like Bethenny [Frankel] or those other reality stars." </P><P> </P><P>Caplan also proposed that a baby photo will probably leak. "As for when will we see baby Blue, I wouldn't be surprised if some sort of grainy-looking paparazzi photo emerges," he said. "Those photographers are very crafty, even if Beyonc&#233; and Jay-Z think they're doing all they can to keep Blue away from photographers. But ultimately, I think you can expect to see her baby photos in a magazine pictorial, and that will be Blue's introduction to the world. That's the real reveal people want to see." </P><P> </P><P><i>Are you looking forward to the first photos of Blue Ivy? 'Hunger Games' Vs. 'Twilight': Muppets Edition

Kermit the Frog and new Muppet Walter join MTV News as co-hosts of this week's 'Talk Nerdy.'
By Josh Wigler

Want a surefire way to cease all productivity in your workplace? Bring in the Muppets. It works every time.

Kermit the Frog and newly-minted man-of-a-Muppet Walter graced MTV News with their presence earlier this week, catching the attention of everyone passing through our newsroom at the time. As you might expect, the "Muppets" stars are quite the charming duo in real life. It's one thing to see their antics on the big screen; watching them come alive right before you, however, is another experience entirely. The effect they have on even the most serious of grown adults (though, admittedly, we don't have many of those around these parts) is astounding: Within seconds of laying eyes on Kermit and Walter, years of growth and maturity immediately fade away, leaving you in a temporary state of childlike wonder. In short, I fully recommend meeting Muppets if you ever have the chance.

Of course, Kermit and Walter weren't at MTV News headquarters purely out of the kindness of their hearts, kind though their hearts may be: They were here to promote "The Muppets," arriving on Blu-ray and DVD on March 20. We were happy to chat with them about the awesome home-video release — it has an intermission feature, everybody! An intermission feature! — but Kermit and Walter had more than just their own movie on their minds: They also wanted to talk about superheroes, vampires, deadly tournaments and more.

As such, Kermit and Walter were perfect candidates to fill in as special guest co-hosts on "Talk Nerdy" this week. It's always fun to geek out with fellow nerds about Captain America and Katniss Everdeen, but hitting those subjects with two of the most popular Muppets out there? Priceless. Here's a quick list of some of the things I learned from Kermit and Walter's "Nerdy" appearance.

» Kermit really likes my last name, Wigler. Walter has a weird last name, too, but for very different, politically relevant reasons.

» While he's very excited to see "Marvel's The Avengers" this summer, Walter had a suggestion for how to make Joss Whedon's superhero movie even better. Hint: It involves Muppets.

» Kermit and Walter took sides on the "Twilight" versus "Hunger Games" debate. Their positions, and their reasons, might surprise you.

» Believe it or not, Kermit is a survivor of the Hunger Games. A different kind of Hunger Games, sure, but Hunger Games nonetheless.

» Special features on "The Muppets" Blu-ray include the ability to use the disc as a ninja throwing star or as a coaster. It's versatile like that.

See what else Kermit and Walter had to say in this week's episode of "Talk Nerdy"! "The Muppets" arrives on Blu-ray on March 20.

Check out everything we've got on "The Muppets."

REALITY FAMILIES: Tamar & Toni Braxton OUT & ABOUT + LaLa & Kiyan Make An Ice Cream Run!

It's been a tough week for Knick fans.  First rumors of star Carmelo Anthony wanting to leave the team surfaced (which he denies), then head coach Mike D'Antoni resigned.  So Melo's wife LaLa & son Kiyan decided to de-stress with some serous dessert at Serendipity in NYC.

Pics of the mom & son duo, plus sisters Tamar & Toni Braxton, inside...

Before heading to Madison Square Garden to watch hubby Melo help the Knicks break their losing streak against the Portland Trailblazers last night, LaLa Anthony brought their 5-year-old son Kiyan to Serendipity for an ice cream date!

The cutesy duo looked relaxed on the unseasonably warm day.  The Anthony family is readying the premiere of season 2 of "LaLa's Full Court Life" going down on the 19th.

And elsewhere in NYC last night:

"Braxton Family Values" co-stars and sisters Tamar & Toni Braxton were spotted leaving their hotel.

Toni went natural underneath her hat and looked cute as usual.

And Tamar stopped to snap pics with fans:

Anybody else loving this season of the show?  That damn Gabe and Trina though....

By the way, "Her" is celebrating a birthday.com on the 17th.  Happy early birthday Tamar!

'Hunger Games' Actress Sees Katniss In Jennifer Lawrence

'Jen has some of Katniss' qualities in her,' Amandla Stenberg told MTV News of the 'Hunger Games' leading lady.
By Josh Wigler, with reporting by Josh Horowitz

Jennifer Lawrence is Katniss Everdeen, though not every fan agreed prior to the actress' casting almost a full year ago. Was her hair dark enough? Was she young enough? These were the nitpicky details that some readers of "The Hunger Games" latched onto, but based on increasing buzz about the film's fantastic quality, those worries should be out the door by now — and if they're not, Amandla Stenberg is here to convince you of Lawrence's worthiness.

"I think they're kind of similar," Stenberg, who plays fan-favorite tribute Rue in the film, told MTV News on the "Hunger Games" red carpet in Los Angeles on Monday. "Jen has some of Katniss' qualities in her. She can be kind of sarcastic, and I think Jen has that same sense of humor."

Stenberg certainly had plenty of chances to see for herself just how much Lawrence and Everdeen have in common. As Rue, the young actress spent most of her screen time opposite the Oscar-nominated "Winter's Bone" actress, playing her first ally in the deadly competition. Indeed, Rue is at the center of what may very well be the most anticipated scene in the film for "Hunger Games" readers.

"I want fans to be happy with it," Stenberg said of her all-too-crucial spoiler-heavy scene. "But being on set though, even when we were shooting such a serious scene, everyone was lighthearted and having fun. We tried to keep it a little happy on set."

For Stenberg, it wasn't hard to stay happy, considering that she had read "The Hunger Games" a whopping four times before even landing the part of Rue. As a fan of the books, Stenberg admitted that she was pretty nervous going into the audition process, even though she clearly nailed the tryout in the end.

"I went to [director Gary Ross'] house covered in mud with leaves and twigs in my hair and everything, so I looked like Rue," she recalled. "I think I made a good impression, because it went really well. I was very nervous though because I didn't hear back for a couple weeks, but then I got a call from my agent saying I got the part. I started screaming and running around!"

Lady Gaga Launches Born This Way Foundation

'This is not an anti-bullying foundation; this is a youth-empowerment foundation,' Mother Monster says at Harvard launch event.
By Jocelyn Vena

<P><a href="/news/articles/1677562/lady-gaga-born-this-way-foundation.jhtml">Lady Gaga and her mother, Cynthia Germanotta</a>, took over Harvard University to launch their <a href="/news/articles/1673633/lady-gaga-born-this-way-foundation.jhtml"><i>Born This Way</i> Foundation</a> on Wednesday (February 29). In front of a crowd that included <a href="/news/articles/1679223/lady-gaga-oprah-winfrey-foundation.jhtml">Oprah Winfrey</a>, the New York natives kicked off their inspirational foundation, hoping to empower the youth of America. </P><P> </P><P>"I was recently with the great Gloria Steinem, who said that sometimes the only way you can get attention to a problem is to freak people out," <a href="http://act.mtv.com/posts/lady-gaga-launches-born-this-way-foundation/">Oprah said at the event</a>." 'Break the form,' she said. You have to stop playing the game in order to change the content. Lady Gaga, with her music and her message and her own story, is breaking the form, and she is changing consciousness. She says that she wasn't put on earth just to sing songs; her passion is to be that force for good. The <i>Born This Way</i> Foundation is in line with so many of my core beliefs." </P><P> </P><P>Gaga enthusiastically opened up about the foundation and what she hopes to do with it. "I just have one thing to say before we get started: We got Oprah! ... Thank you from all of us &#8212; from my entire team, from my mother, from the bottom of the hearts of so many people who believe in what we're doing today," she said, wearing a chocolate-brown gown, brown lace gloves, towering platforms and a sparkly fishnet hat. </P><P> </P><P>"I'm not here today to give you an answer. And I'm not here to tell you I can solve these problems [of bullying]. This is about transformative change in culture over a period of time. One of the most important things I wanted to share with all of you today, it's no secret I speak out against bullying. This is not an anti-bullying foundation; this is a youth-empowerment foundation," she continued. "This is about changing the climate of the school environment and not putting the power in the hands of the teachers or the government. It is about the bubble effect. I don't believe they have the answers; I believe that you do." </P><P> </P><P>In addition to her fans, Gaga said her biggest influence to start the foundation is her own Mother Monster. "My mother really inspires me, because she talked about giving back ever since I was very, very young," she said. "And the more that I got to know my fans, the more that I realized that not everybody has that support system at home." </P><P> </P><P>Her mother later enthused that despite the snow outside, "It is even more beautiful inside because we are launching the foundation. The youth that is listening: you are the leaders of our future." </P><P> </P><P>Gaga also revealed another aspect of the foundation: "There is a bus now called the Born Brave Bus. So the Born Brave Bus is essentially a bus that is going to travel and follow my tour bus around the country, and it will welcome anyone from any walk of life to come and hang out and talk about love, acceptance, kindness and so forth. And the best thing about it it's going to be fun. It's going to essentially be a tailgate. This is not about saying, 'I need help,' but if you do, you can come. If you want to help someone else, you can come and say 'Hey, what's up?' " </P><P> </P><P>At the end of the day, Gaga said the foundation "is all about saying the power is in your hands. There really is sort of a focus on the victim, but what I want to point out today is that the victim and the bully are on the same playing field. How do we say, 'You are both equal members of society'? How do we not save not just the victim, but also the bully? I want the <i>Born This Way</i> Foundation to empower the youth of the world." </P><P> </P><P>Gaga further explained that one of the core values is teaching her fans to empower themselves to be "brave." </P><P> </P><P>"This, again, is not focused on bullying, the bravery aspect; I want for young people to know they have the power," she said. "How can we inspire young people to know they have the power to be brave?"</p>

George Clooney Hits Wahington, D.C. to Tackle Sudan Issues

Proving he's not just a handsome stud with amazing acting skills, George Clooney is spending time bringing light to some serious issues in the violent Sudanese region of Africa.

The "Descendants" star met with South Sudan's minister and a regional governor last week and, according to the Associated Press, he also crossed into the dangerous Nuba Mountains where civilians were forced to take shelter in caves because the region was under aerial military attack.

Since last year, the area has been rocked by conflict and a hunger crisis after South Sudan accused Sudan of stealing oil, then threatening to shut down the oil industry.

During one of Clooney's most recent visits, the actor helped establish the Satellite Sentinel Project in hopes of ending violence by tracking military movements through satellite imagery.

Meanwhile, the Senate Foreign Relations Committee is set to examine the oil dispute in Sudan during a hearing on Wednesday (March 14) - with George having been spotted arriving in the nation's capital via Amtrak late Tuesday night.

'Cabin In The Woods' Cast Talks 'Thrilling' Death Scenes

At South by Southwest film festival, star Jesse Williams says Joss Whedon's horror flick is 'both awesome and terrifying at the same time.'
By Kara Warner

What's a horror movie without a few sensational death scenes? One that could be described as less-than-satisfactory by the gung ho gore fans out there. And although there is a lot of secrecy surrounding the action in "The Cabin in the Woods," it is not spoiling anything to say that there might be a gory death or two.

When MTV News caught up with castmembers Anna Hutchison, Jesse Williams and Kristen Connolly at the film's South by Southwest film festival press day, we asked them to describe how the deaths in the Joss Whedon-penned, Drew Goddard-directed film are different from what we've seen onscreen before.

"I think people get connected to the characters, but somehow I find the murders in this film are more thrilling," Williams said. "You know the train wreck effect where you want to look away — something that is both awesome and terrifying at the same time?

"Like, one time I almost touched a shark in the open ocean. I didn't realize it was a shark. 'I'm excited, but I'm going to die.' So, those kind of things happening at once. Anna knows what I'm talking about."

"Well, lose a hand. I don't know about die," Hutchison offered. "It's a bit dramatic."

"She's from New Zealand where it's like playing in the yard for them: 'Go play with the sharks!' " he teased. "I think it's both those things happening at once where you're uniquely thrilled, but you're going to miss that character — but that's not saying that any of us die or don't die in the end."

Get the details regarding Roger Fenty’s Q & A session with Heat Magazine below. This latest news regarding the Chris Brown/Rihanna saga should have some in an uproar. Ronald Fenty, the father of the Umbrella singer, has shown his support for the notoriously bad behaved rapper, who is well known for more than just his anger management issues. After assaulting and humiliating his daughter, Fenty has shown his support by surprisingly calling singer Chris Brown a nice guy. “Chris is a nice guy and everyone is entitled to make a mistake in their life. God knows how many I’ve made. She’s her own woman now,” Rihanna?s father is quoted as saying during a recent interview with the U.K?s Heat Magazine. Fenty also went on to call his pop singing daughter, and sex symbol, fat the last time he saw her, before the Rihanna reportedly lost weight. “I actually thought she was a little fat last time I saw her,” he told the UK?s Heat magazine. “When I saw her this time, I thought she was [...]

Rihanna Gets TITillating In NYC In A Revealing Sheer Shirt, Rocks Out In New Orleans

Rihanna just landed in NYC like hours ago and is already causing a TITillating ruckus.  Slightly NSFW Pics of Rih Rih arriving to dinner baring her chi chis in a sheer mesh-like shirt inside....

Upon landing at the airport in NYC, paparazzi asked Rihanna what she thought about Snooki's pregnancy.  Her response? "That's dope. We need more Snookis in the world!" Oh yeah?

The 24-year-old "Take Care" singer got the attention she asked for while hitting up her fave restaurant Da Silvano for a Sunday night dinner in New York.  After jetting into Manhattan after performing in New Orleans and settling into her hotel room, she threw on her jeans, Timberland boots, and this nipple baring black sheer shirt for the night out.  And grabbed the attention of the paps:

Rih performed a charity concert fundraiser "A Night to Make It Right" in New Orleans over the weekend hosted by Brad Pitt.  Despite looking tired and jet lagged, chick through on her best attention grabbing shirt for the night out.  You feelin' it?

Here's videos from her "Run this Town" performance with Kanye and "We Found Love" at the N.o.'s Hyatt Regency Hotel:

The gala raised money for the completion of 150 eco-friendly homes in the hard hit 9th Ward. Snoop Dogg, Jamie Foxx, Sheryl Crow and Seal were on hand as well.

Heather Morris In Nude Photo Controversy

'Glee' star has yet to comment on photos that hit the Web over the weekend.
By Jocelyn Vena

"Glee" star Heather Morris finds herself in the thick of a nude photo scandal. Reported photos of the former backup dancer hit the Web over the weekend.

In the photos, the actress/dancer is wearing nothing as she poses quite provocatively in what appears to be a bedroom. There are less scandalous shots that also were leaked in the batch, and they feature Morris in a "Slave 4 U" costume she once donned on the hit Fox show. The actress has yet to comment on the shots.

It's hardly the first time she's had naked photos hit the Internet. In 2010, nude modeling shots of her appeared online, but the actress said she wasn't ashamed in an interview with "Extra." "No, I kind of thought it might happen," she said at the time. "I understand completely where it came from. For me, I think they are beautiful. It's not something I'm ashamed of. Everybody should do tasteful beautiful nudes — so when you get older, you're gonna be like, 'Oh that's when my body looked so great!'

The news of her photo leak comes just days after both Olivia Munn and Christina Hendricks were reportedly hacked and nude photos of them appeared online. Munn addressed the controversy in a statement over the weekend.

Read aloud by her "The Babymakers" director Jay Chandrasekhar during South by Southwest film festival, she laughed off all the Internet rumors about the shots. "Oh, and one last thing — Some of those pictures weren't even me," the statement read, according to E! News. "I mean, you can't even see my penis ... and it's pretty big for an Asian. Sheesh."

Are Madonna And Britney Spears Collaborating On MDNA?

Amid rumors that Spears will appear on Madge's 'Girls Gone Wild,' MTV News looks back at their history together.
By Jocelyn Vena

<P>Could it be that <a href="http://www.mtv.com/music/artist/madonna/artist.jhtml">Madonna</a> has enlisted her pal <a href="http://www.mtv.com/music/artist/spears_britney/artist.jhtml">Britney Spears</a> for <a href="/news/articles/1678197/madonna-mdna-album.jhtml"><i>MDNA</i></a>? </P><P> </P><P></p><div class="player-placeholder right" id="vid:623135.id:1657989" width="240" height="211"></div><p> </P><P> </P><P>Well, according to a leaked album jacket, it seems that Spears is making an appearance on the album's lead track, "Girls Gone Wild." </P><P> </P><P>This would mark the second collaboration on the album. Madonna nabbed Nicki Minaj and M.I.A. for the album's first single, <a href="/news/articles/1678478/madonna-give-me-all-your-luvin-video.jhtml">"Give Me All Your Luvin'."</a> </P><P>While the leaked jacket, which appeared on Britney fansite <a href="http://www.breatheheavy.com/2012/02/britney-on-new-madonna-album/?utm_medium=twitter&utm_source=twitterfeed" target="_blank">Breatheheavy.com</a>, can't be confirmed as authentic, a rep for Madge had no comment about the rumor, neither confirming nor denying it. Meanwhile, a rep for Spears never returned MTV News' request for comment. </P><P> </P><P>This is hardly the first time that the two ladies have worked together. In fact, they have quite a history with each other. </P><P> </P><P>The duo kicked off their nearly decade-long friendship at the 2003 VMAs when, in case you hadn't heard, they <a href="/news/articles/1669706/britney-spears-mtv-vma-history.jhtml">shared an onstage kiss</a> while performing together. It was the kiss seen and heard around the world, and nearly 10 years later it is still often talked about as one of the most memorable moments in the show's storied history. </P><P> </P><P>After they shared that smooch, Spears was inspired to get the Queen of Pop on her lead <i>In the Zone</i> single, <a href="/news/articles/1658075/britney-spears-me-against-the-music.jhtml">"Me Against the Music."</a> "I was in the middle of rehearsals for the VMAs and I played her the song, and she was like, 'That's your first single, right?' " Britney recalled in a vintage interview with MTV. "I was like, 'Yeah, hopefully.' She was like, 'I really like it.' I was like, 'Really?' I was like, 'Well, you wanna do it with me?' She said, 'Yeah.' " </P><P> </P><P>They later appeared together in the warehouse-set video with one another, playing a pop star cat-and-mouse game that featured a near kiss. </P><P> </P><P>Five years later, as Spears was prepping her return to the pop spotlight, she appeared <a href="/news/articles/1598804/britney-spears-justin-timberlake-appear-onstage-with-madonna.jhtml">onstage with Madonna</a> during a Sticky &amp; Sweet Tour stop at Dodger Stadium in Los Angeles. The singer hit the stage with the pop icon to perform "Human Nature" by her side. </P><P> </P><P>That same year, Madonna appeared in <a href="/news/articles/1600361/britney-spears-talks-breakups-breakdowns-in-for-the-record.jhtml">Spears' documentary, "For the Record,"</a> where she spoke about the younger singer. "I admire her as an artist," the Material Girl said, adding that she sees a lot of herself in Spears. </P><P>In 2011, as Spears was prepping the release of her album <i>Femme Fatale,</i> in an <a href="/news/articles/1659522/britney-spears-plastic-surgery-out-magazine.jhtml">interview with <i>Out</i> magazine</a>, she noted that she truly admires her friend. "Madonna. No question. She is an amazing entertainer," she said when asked whose career she most would want to emulate. </P><P> </P><P>As Madonna preps the release of <i>MDNA</i> in March, Spears is also the topic of conversation in a recent interview with her. When asked by ABC News what it was like to smooch the pop princess, she commented, "Nice moment, good kisser. Cool," she said, clarifying that she wouldn't do it again. "No, I already did it. I don't like to repeat myself." </P><P> </P><P>Well, perhaps a kiss would be "reductive" (her word, not ours), but it seems given the love that Madge and Spears fans have for the two pop stars, they wouldn't mind them cooking up some musical magic. </P><P>The track, "Girls Gone Wild," was teased in a megamix that dropped last week and it certainly feels like it would lend itself to both Madonna and Brit's musical sensibilities: It's fist-pumpingly dance-y, sexy and all about going out and having a good time, with Madge proclaiming, "Girls, they just want to have some fun/ Get fired up like a smoking gun/ On the floor till the daylight comes/ Girls, they just want to have some fun." </P><P> </P><P><center><embed src="http://media.mtvnservices.com/mgid:uma:video:mtv.com:728690/cp~id%3D1672718%26vid%3D728690%26uri%3Dmgid%3Auma%3Avideo%3Amtv.com%3A728690%26instance%3Dmtv" width="460" height="260" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowFullScreen="true" allowScriptAccess="always" base="." flashVars=""></embed></center> </P><P> </P><P><i>What would you think of a new Britney Spears/ Madonna collabo? Beyonce's Baby, Britney's Betrothal And More: 2012 Predictions

We forecast the year that will be for your favorite stars, in Bigger Than the Sound.

<P>Welcome to 2012, the year that will either bring us <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2012_phenomenon" target="_blank">the end of civilization</a> as we know it or perhaps flying cars (finally!) Of course, between those two events, there's also going to be a presidential election, the London Olympics and that last "Twilight" movie (finally x 100!), not to mention a whole lot of activity within the lives of your favorite stars, too: Babies, weddings, honorary doctorates in nanotechnology; <i>this</i> is the year it'll all happen. </P><P> </P><P></p><div class="player-placeholder right" id="vid:722495.id:1672369" width="240" height="211"></div><p> </P><P> </P><P>Which is why, with the new year upon us, I've decided to get my <a href="http://www.amazingkreskin.com/" target="_blank">Kreskin</a> on with these predictions for 2012.
